2012 the Year of the Decider

One candidate calls himself a businessman who has lived in the real business world. He understands the economy because of this and will be a better choice for president because he’s a decider. Can some one please inform this candidate that he doesn’t understand how Government works? There are a group of elected officials called the congress who decide on financing the government not the economy. They call this a budget, which comes out of a budget committee then voted on by a majority of congress in both houses. Only if a majority in both houses passes this budget bill will you get the opportunity to decide by signing it into law or veto it and send it back for revisions. Capitalist don’t fear the president and his policies they fear the Congress and Senate for their lack of legislation. The problem any President has and will always have begun in the 1975 rules changes made by the senate. Any legislature to pass after a filibuster requires a three fifths vote of the senate or 60 votes out of 100 also know as a supermajority.

Our Government has stalled we have had a political split in our Congress and Senate which is contributing to the slowest economic recovery in history. Our Government is not Governing. There are 435 elected Members of the House of Representatives and 100 Senators.  These 535 individuals out of 310,000,000 citizens in this country control through legislation the economic solvency of our nation and its people. Briefly, in 2008 to 2010 we had some semblance of legislation passed because we had a majority in both houses of congress and a bipartisan atmosphere in the Senate which could get the 60 vote supermajority. In the elections of 2010 we lost all hope for the next two years of getting anything done. Since the 2010 election nothing of any substance has been passed to assist in getting our debt under control and our economy of the right track.

There continues to be growing split of the far rights insistence on continuing to become the party of past bad policies and representing the few instead of the majority. Although their base continues to support them, against their own best interests, the proposed irrational Republican policies (Ryan Budget) to cut programs which support the middle class and stimulate the economy, will most likely affect the Republican base who are among the middle class and unemployed and who have been hurt by the Bush Tax cuts for the wealthy. Extended as a compromise in 2010 was a bi-partisan agreement by President Obama to extend the Bush Tax cuts, and an extension of unemployment for one year, to avoid hurting the middle class with tax increases. Republicans were willing to allow this if the wealthy didn’t get their Tax cuts as well. Continuing on a path of partisan politics the Republican Party refused to pass any legislation that would create jobs for middle class Americans. The 435 members of the Republican controlled congress have done absolutely nothing for the American people over the last two years. Their only objective is to instill fear, create hardships and make everyone feel miserable without any hope for the future and hopefully defeat president Obama in 2012 or as Mitch McConnell ® said it “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president” when speaking after the 2008 elections.

The decider in 2012 will be the American people. Electing a Congress and a Senate that will work with the President is the most important decision you will ever make. The president of the United States is only good as his Congress and Senate.

The Real Story needs to be told

Re: It’s story time for Nugent by Paulette Lash Ritchie

Mr. Richard Nugent got back to his roots as he states after reading to first graders at Weeki Wachee K-8.  He read a book about our system of legislating using the characters in the book as House Mice and Senate Mice. What he didn’t realize is the portrayal used exemplifies most representatives in Washington mice or in some cases rats. read more »

A conversation with Rush

I can’t refrain from writing about a conversation I recently had with an individual I once admired for their profession and believed was well educated in one of Florida’s best institutions of higher learning and now I use the terms higher learning loosely in this case. read more »

Unite Voters of America

The United   States of America is divided, Left, Middle,  Right and economically in two the rich and everyone else. Because of these  divides we find confusion and apathy growing in our population day after day setting  the groundwork for a perfect political and economic storm which will  potentially have catastrophic results affecting everyone not seen since the  great depression. In war one of the most important strategic maneuvers is to  separate and divide. Are we at war and with whom?  read more »

What Time is it Folks

Did you catch the Carnival Thursday? Representative Nugent rolled into town with his Republican script
tailored for his Tea Party followers and any non Tea party constituents. What’s new is that on the day that he delivered his parties scripted opinion the Dow Jones Index dropped $512.00.

His response to many questions in general was we did the best we could under the circumstances, including the
Debt Ceiling bill S365. What he hasn’t answered is why 12.9 percent are still unemployed in Hernando  County and why his party has not sponsored one jobs bill since he has been elected on a platform to create jobs.

When asked why he signed Grover Norquist’s pledge not to raise taxes he said he didn’t sign it for Norquist, he signed it for the gentlemen sitting in the audience. Sure he did? A retired school teacher tried to express her fears about the budget cuts that would affect her, Nugent’s response was that each of us has to choose how much we will be willing to give up. My question is why he is willing to ask us to sacrifice and not the wealthy he is trying to protect who earn taxable income over $250,000 a year. (The Norquist signing.)

Since the election of Barack Obama in 2008 the Republican agenda has been to discredit and inflict much pain on the people of the United Sates. They blame President Obama and the common man for the Great Recession not the Bankers on Wall Street. They blame President Obama and the common man for Governments spending not themselves and the previous Bush administration tax cuts for the rich, two wars, and an unpaid for drug program.

I know I’ve seen and heard this before so I traveled back in time to my child hood and realized I was watching the Howdy Doody show all over again. A wooden puppet controlled by his master.

Cut, Cap and Balance

For which the details do not exist except for $111 million in cuts initially yet not identified. Republicans
want to cut expenses, Cap Spending at 18.5% of GDP (22.5% next year) and a Balanced Budget Amendment which will also require a two thirds majority to raise taxes. read more »

Greed or shared growth.

While watching the financial channel many of the experts predict growth in the second half of the year. The degree of growth not specified. The question is growth for whom.

Sixteen million Americans are either unemployed or underemployed Corporations are holding trillions of dollars on their balance sheets. Corporate profits, Healthcare profits and Banking profits are at all time highs. Bonuses are greater than ever before for top executives and those making these profits. I remember a television advertisement with an old grey haired  man saying “at Morbid Stoney we make money the old fashioned way we earn it.” Those days are long gone. Today they make money utilizing computer generated trading models to take advantage of imbalances in the interest rate markets or  the stock market. The speed of executing billions of dollars of these transactions would boggle your mind. The biggest insult to hard working Americans is that Banks and Corporations are borrowing money from our Government at 0% or as high as .25% and investing in quick money transactions while home owners struggling to refinance can’t borrow at less than 4% on  average if they qualify. read more »

Budget Battles and Turf Wars

You would think that after 4 years of declining revenue and  the depletion of county reserve funds the county commission would finally realize that the Bush great recession is not going away to soon. As a matter of  fact we will be crawling out of this recession for the remainder of this  decade. Their priorities are so misdirected Administrator Hamilton reminds me  of a teacher trying to control and unruly 1st grade class where the  students are running wild with no direction or purpose. One example of their  misdirection is the Dredge Project which is going on over 10 years. This year is  a bad budget year yet, they decide to spend over 7 million of county tax  dollars on the dredge project when asking employees to sacrifice their jobs and  compensation. If they would have given back the 3 million they received from  the state for the dredge project we would have saved 4 million dollars in tax  dollars. This number I believe is next years budget shortfall. Did I just solve  their budget problem NOT.  All county  departments including the constitutional offices must cut to the minimum  necessary yet provide the basic services needed to service the community.

“When  the going gets tough the tough get going”. Unlike this commission.

I think this commission needs to go.

Florida Voters were fooled

Tuesday the 15th of March I attended a rally at the Spring Hill Dr. Library for Move On .Org. We were rallying for the workers in the State of Florida who are currently under attach by Governor Rick Scott and the Republican majorities in the State House and State Senate. I met a young man with his wife and children. He just lost his job because of the Scott budget cuts for social work programs. We heard from women who also lost her job recently with a heart condition and no health insurance while Scott was cutting Medicaid funding which gave her no options for treatment. Who are the workers in Florida? They are Teachers, Firemen, Policemen, Librarians, Nurses State Workers, County Workers and all the Service Employees of Florida. Targeted at the moment are Teachers in the public school system. Republican legislation Senate Bill 736 now called the Son of Six eliminates tenure for teachers hired beginning July 1, ties teachers pay to student test scores, and ends layoffs based on seniority. I find it cynical and not amusing that Republicans would use a reference to the Son of Sam a mass murderer because that’s exactly what they are doing to the Teaching Profession, murdering a once sacred profession. What this bill does it takes away everything gained through collective bargaining for teachers for over decades through union accomplishments, does this sound familiar Wisconsin. Teachers who once were admired for their contribution to society’s progress through teaching future generation are now no longer admired for their efforts but treated like they are the cause of the State Governments over spending. The truth of the matter is this. How else can you provide the money to businesses that were instrumental in getting you elected you do this by cutting aid to school districts by 1.7 Billion dollars and give tax cuts to those same businesses? Rick Scott a man who took the 5th amendment 75 times as CEO of HCA during a deposition hearing for his role in the embezzlement of billions from Medicare and The Republican majority House and Senate found the way by giving almost 1.5 Billion of tax cuts to Corporations. Those of you who voted for these characters are getting a wake up call. Sooner or later the old saying comes true, you can fool some of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time. Did Florida get fooled?

Radical Republicanism

It is impossible not to hear and read political rhetoric every time we turn on a news channel or read a newspaper. We are continually exposed to constant reference to different types of ideologies and philosophies through the use of terms such as Liberal, Progressive, Left, Far Left, Conservative, Right, and Far Right and so on.These terms of fear are used as stigmas so that once associated with an individual or organization we no longer need to read what they are representing or who they represent we just need to fear them. All these terms are communicated to all of us easily in an age of high tech media and is a simple method of classification which than defines the dividing lines of individuals and organizations.

Globalization and its Consequences

I read the paper every day and I listen to broadcast news every evening.  Whether it is local news or world news 90 percent of the time it is negative. The subject matter of the news consistently deals with human beings or groups of human beings perpetrating an injustice on another human being or group. Just to list a few of these crimes being committed against one another are kidnapping, physical and mental abuse, murder, misuse of power, terrorism, political scandal, corporate scandal, church scandal, and on and on. I wonder how all of these crimes and negative news reporting affects us. Globally crimes against one another has increased dramatically over the last 25 to 30 years.

This brings me to the subject question I present to the readers of this writing; Is there a connection between globalization and societies unrest and has it contributed to a more unruly and inhumane world society in which peaceful coexistence cannot prevail?  Let us take a look at what has happened.  A majority of our world leaders prescribe to a globalization of trade. The economic theories which support a globalization of trade is based upon basic supply and demand principles of cheaply produced products and services with a minimal percent of cost attributable to labor. Keep in mind that labor costs plus benefits can range from 45 to 85 percent of the cost to produce a product or provide a service (Education at the higher end). Since the 80’s corporations have been shifting their manufacturing and services to those human resource markets where there is an abundance of labor. This occurrence was a result of products and services produced in a national market no longer provided enough corporate profits and that national borders confined the corporations to limited demand for their products and services. The political leaders of all nations at the behest of Domestic and International Corporations had to enter into international trade agreements and national alliances whereby products produced in one nation can freely flow to other nations without tariff; hence agreements such as NAFTA and the creation of the European Union. The competitiveness for profits changed the balance of power in the world. The United States once the greatest economic power in the world had found itself on a playing field with reduced advantage. The solution prescribed began in the 80’s; produce products and provide services in cheap labor markets, legislate trade agreements beneficail to corporations, and begin the outsourcing of labor to cheap labor markets. This accelerated with the technological revolution in the 90’s. If you don’t believe me, when you shop at Walmart check the manufacturers country of origin, or when you call a customer service number find out what country the representative is working out of. I coined the phrase Downsizing of American Payroll in 1989; this reduction of compensation and recycling of American employees was necessary to compete with international labor markets whose salaries were substantially below the U.S. labor market. It has been called “War on The Middle Class” by Lou Dobbs of CNN recently in his new book; I believe it to be more serious than that. Employees who were downsized found themselves in U.S. labor markets where the same paying jobs no longer existed.  Employees had one of two options take a similar job at less money or start a new profession at a lower salary. A lose lose situation. I would like to point out this process includes the equaliztion of the american middle class to the middle class worldwide at much lower american compensation levels. The reports on salaries, wages, and benefits substantiate my comments. The Employee Cost Index in 2001 increased 16.2%, in 2005 it increased 12.2%, a decline of 20% over 5 years. Adding to the dismal wage picture is the increase in benefit costs 19.5 % in 2001 and 20.4 in 2005 a 4.6 % increase in 5 years which are included in the Employee Cost Index. Wages and salaries rate of increase have declined 32% over the last five years. Statistics obtained at http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/surveymost?ci U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor and Statistics. The continuation of these trends in the United States will result in the elimination of the middle class. Expendable income will decline to its minimum as a result in the increasing cost to live. Health Insurance, Home Insurance, Property Taxes will become the major costs if not already in our personal budgets. The poor population will grow dramatically. Government Social Programs with be bankrupt and a greater burdon put on the taxpayer. The middle class who pay the governments deficits won’t exsist.

The unbalanced distribution of wealth within our world society has caused the masses to react. In the world today the United States and Western societies are being blamed for everything that is wrong in our world. Western societies have permitted the deterioration of underdeveloped nations socioeconomical systems by allowing corrupt rulers to pillage the nartional resources of the region, and therefore the reciprocator of their hatred.  People kill people in the name of religion, of course this isn’t new in history, but I believe that this resurgence of religious wars has been brought about by the globalization of trade, and the redistribution of wealth worldwide. Anti Western organizations, militia’s, terrorists groups, and countries use the media to exploit the masses. The local media has a major influence on its masses. The media’s first purpose is to report the facts yet it has transgressed to form opinions in the minds of its viewers at the request of local governments. Call it brainwashing if you’d like to. An example of this is Al Jazerra in the Middle East. This is a network whose main purpose is to slant information against western societies and to instigate anger against anything that is of western origin. Combine this with the Iraq War and what has developed is the objective of every non-western nation to seek revenge against western civilization. Media influence does not only apply to non-western nations. Our Western Media is used to influence where we shop, what we buy, how we eat, and yes, how we vote.

Election Results

I haven’t written any opinions lately, and it’s not that I have lost my ambition or interest in the many issues which affect all of us. I have been soaking up all the responses and reactions to a historic event. The presidential campaign included one of the worst personal attacks I have ever witnessed on a candidate in my 60 years. Locally these tactics unseated a county commissioner by the same political opponents whose financial resources were the only reason for her loss. One candidate’s win was justified the other’s loss was not.

We now have a president elect, who has begun his masterful approach to management and delegation of responsibility. He has already displayed his ability to make decisions based on his campaign promises, a diversified administration to begin a new path for America.

Unlike our sitting and new commissioner’s who after installation have displayed their inability to change or set Hernando on the right course for planned development and responsible growth. Immediately they approved a new Walmart Superstore on County Line Road just east of the Suncoast Parkway not to mention the massive planned development at I75 and State Road 50 for residential, and retail.  It seems that the damage these five commissioners will do in the next two years will affect Hernando County for generations to come if not stopped. The sad part about all of this is that those of us who continue to live in Hernando will be abandoned by those who make these decisions and those who profit from their decisions.

Small town thinking prevents jobs growth

In Response to an article Hard Times Ahead in Retail, Novemebr 27, 2008, This was published on July 8, 2008 in the Hernando Times Section of the  St. Petersburg Times.

Re: Times Editorial, Clear plan needed in Hernando to reverse economic woes Two and a half years ago on September 29th2006 my opinion was published Re: County Leadership remains stuck in the 90’s I praised Mr. Michael McHugh for a presentation to the Commissioners which at the time showed insightfulness and the need for leadership. Here we are again discussing how this county is going to create higher paying jobs by bringing in businesses and providing them with qualified educated workers. I must admit that I had hope and confidence at that time that Mr. McHugh would accomplish this objective. To my dismay, he hasn’t. If the best we can do is bring in companies who bring with them 10 to 20 paying jobs this county is in trouble for many years to come.

It has been said before, this county can not depend on residential construction, real estate, and government employment alone to support our infrastructure and services provided. Lowering impact fees to stimulate the economy in Hernando is a ridiculous suggestion placed before the commissioners. Homebuilders, Developers, and Real Estate Brokers and Agents are the only ones who will benefit from this rip off at the expense of the taxpayers and the government; why don’t they lower their profits and commissions to stimulate growth.

The real problem in Hernando County is planning and foresight. This county faces many challenges in the future. To accomplish what is best for the Families and Businesses of this county requires a group of non-partisan leaders. We need leadership, with vision, and the will and constitution, to walk the talk. We need insightful leaders who will make decisions for the betterment of Hernando County as a whole. Decisions based on realistic objectives and goals that fall within the constraints of the Counties Comprehensive Plan. We don’t need politicians influenced by local lobbies we need Independent Leaders in this county. We need leaders who oppose sprawl and encourage managed growth. We need leaders who can go outside the county, state and country to bring in companies who create more than 20 jobs.

Hernando County has educated workers who leave the county because there are no job opportunities available in the county for them to stay. We are no longer a retirement community we are a younger family tax base who is in need of more than minimum wage job opportunities and who are burdened with the long commute to Tampa or St Petersburg.  Our children in this county who learn a trade or continue on to college; most likely leave after completing their education because of the lack of job opportunities in Hernando County or if they don’t leave they become minimum wage employees with no opportunity for personal growth.

It is time for the focus to be placed on building a tax base that is provided with opportunities for employment in other industries and services other than real estate and minimum wage retail and service jobs.

County Commissioners Need Guidance Counselors

Today’s St PetersburgTimes front page by Barbara Behrendt ” Officials Talk of action, then seek more talk”. From a constituents perspective, and one who understands leadership roles, I must question the ability of the County Commissioners, and their need to delegate, a key word, to other committees their thought process. Do any of them have the slightest idea why they ran for office? Did they think that their responsilities are to create as stated by Janey Baldwin, a second legislative body. One that wasn’t elected by the people of this county. Thanks for the reality break from Janey Baldwin, it seems she’s was the only logical one in that room.

Mr Russell wants to model the Counties Governmental process after the States Model. That is exactly what Hernando County Government needs more bureaucracy.  He also suggests, that we need to have infrastructure projects ready for the promised state and federal stimulus packages. Now that was original!  The rest of the Commissioners sound like they are still running for office.

I just wonder why we have this group of county commissioners? Sounds like they don’t want to make any decisions unless they were hatched from a committee. I believe the answer is, when recommendations are made by these “Standing Committees” and approved by a majority of the commissioners, no one will take responsibility for its failure. Therefore, the buck didn’t stop at their desk.

Educators and Legislators

When will our so called representatives become proactive rather than reactive? I wonder sometimes if the root of all of our failure stem from our educational systems of higher learning, systems of education, which have prohibited creativity and the learned ability to set goals and objectives for future planning, and systems where curriculums focus on the now rather than the future. Finally, systems of education which have taken away one of the most important learned abilities necessary for success in any vocation or avocation, teaching our men and women the necessity of moral decision making.

Today we are experiencing the failures of these systems at all levels of leadership in both Government, Services and in Industry, leadership whose main focus is on instant rewards personally rather than long term objectives and rewards for an organization. Rewards for the few rather than the majority.

Even during one of the most critical times in the history of the United States, our Senators and Congressmen are playing politics as usual with the livelihoods of millions of Americans, a congress willing to write a blank check to a corrupt administration for 750 billion dollars yet unwilling to give a loan to a vital industry with specific conditions, and possibly save millions of jobs of hard working Americans. At major fault is the leadership in the auto industry who have lacked the foresight and ingenuity to remodel their cars and industry to compete with the global markets.

Our systems of education need to redirect its emphasis on developing leaders, creators, and educators focused on the common good for all mankind. We need to stop producing politicians and we need to develop leaders with a vision which includes all people. All political science curriculums should be eliminated from all institutions of higher learning.

    Modern political science

The advent of political science as a university discipline in the United States is evidenced by the naming of university departments and chairs with the title of political science shortly before the Civil War. In 1857, Francis Lieber was named the first Professor of History and Political Science at Columbia University. In 1880, Columbia formed the first School of Political Science. The discipline established the American Political Science Association in 1903. Integrating political studies of the past into a unified discipline is an ongoing project, and the history of political science has provided a rich field for the growth of both normative and positive political science, with each part of the discipline sharing some historical predecessors.

In the 1950s and the 1960s, a behavioral revolution stressing the systematic and rigorously scientific study of individual and group behavior swept the discipline. At the same time that political science moved toward greater depth of analysis and more sophistication, it also moved toward a closer working relationship with other disciplines, especially sociology, economics, history, anthropology, psychology, and statistics. Increasingly, students of political behavior have used the scientific method to create an intellectual discipline based on the postulating of hypotheses followed by empirical verification and the inference of political trends, and of generalizations that explain individual and group political actions. Over the past generation, the discipline placed an increasing emphasis on relevance, or the use of new approaches and methodologies to solve political and social problems.

In 2000, the so-called Perestroika Movement in political science was introduced as a reaction against what supporters of the movement called the mathematicization of political science. Perestroikans argued for a plurality of methodologies and approaches in political science and for more relevance of the discipline to those outside of it (Chronicle of Higher Education 2001).

Retrieved from “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_political_science

Just to note one important fact the 1950’s and 1960’s focused on individual behavioral and group behavior. The 20th century’s greatest invention besides the automobile became available to the American public in those two decades, television. As Edward R. Murrow said “The speed of communications is wondrous to behold. It is also true that speed can multiply the distribution of information that we know to be untrue”. Television has been used as a tool to alter behavior of people and specifically for political gain and not humanities gain.

We need a redirection of purpose in our educational and political systems. The new administration has inherited a morally corrupt financial wasteland. The path to renew our countries direction has many obstacles politically and morally. The solutions will not be simple, we as Americans have overcome much diversity since our independence, let us renew our faith in the American ability to solve any problem, and we can.

E-mail and the First Amendment

I must clarify a misconception by many who use the internet to communicate. The internet’s creation has been one of the most ingenious aids in complying with the First Amendment of the constitution of the United Sates. It provides the ability to all Americans to express their opinions to a wide range of individuals who choose to read such writings.

An e-mail had been sent to me concerning historical information related to a Nation’s historical growth and subsequent failure and demise. If the sender of this e-mail sent it accidently or intended to send it me, I do not know the answer to this question, yet I read the information and simply concluded that although I may not agree with all of its content I did see some similarities in my conclusions related to the subject. Since I felt that some of my conclusions were similar, I replied to all who had received this e-mail with a link to my Blog. I received a reply the next day from one of the mail recipients that my act was unethical. I apologized, but did not see the reason for the comment. My ethics are intact. If I had to respond in a like manner to all individuals, spam and junk mail sent to me I would have to remain awake 24 hours a day. It was apparent that he visited my Blog and realized that my writings were not in agreement with his thoughts on the subjects I have written about but needed to express a personal attach which leads me to question his principles.

Each day we receive in the US mail an array of opinions on many subjects from many sources. The daily papers are filled with opinions and thoughts that not everyone will agree with. This is what freedom of speech is all about. The sender of the original e-mail choose the group of recipients for a reason, the complaining party needs to contact the originator of the e-mail as well or not open e-mails from unknown senders by just deleting them.

The Bush Legacy

I am amazed at the republican rights’ trying to build a positive image of the Bush Legacy after eight years of failure. Lets’ add up the republican conservative non intervention of government, deregulation, and any other right wing terminology which would define the Republican Administration destruction of the American way of life and dream.

Recently a slew of executive orders favoring multinational corporation to add to the destruction of the ozone layer, and continuing of our dependence on fossil fuels. More than 750 billion to Wall Street and National Banks, over 125 billion to AIG American International Group, with no conditions I may add, and 14 billion with conditions to take power away from unions and to seize limited  control of the three auto makers in this country so that foreign auto makers producing in America have a better advantage.

I know he was elected the president of this country but by his acts he represents the ultimate special interests, which leads me to the main point. Puppet W reminds me of Howdy Doody.  If you remember Buffalo Bob always pulled the strings. Does anyone think that W is capable of making a decision worth any value. He was a man over his head with very little ability to make rational choices. He was incapable to distinguishing between justice for all and just this for the few. He fertilized the greed mentality over the last eight years which has placed us in the crisis we are in today. His organization rivals any organized crime organization since the 20’s. He and his cronies have looted America.

He has violated his oath of office and should be punished for it. There is no excuse for what he has done.

http://money.cnn.com/news/specials/storysupplement/bailout_scorecard/index.html

Wow, so much for conservatism. The big question is based on pure economics of transactions, for every winner there is a looser. We now know who the loosers’ are.  Who are the winners and where did all this money go? Lets see, if people are loosing their homes, that’s one looser, investors in retirement accounts and pension plans are loose rs, that two more, people are loosing their jobs because of  loss of sales and services, that’s one more, who is winning.

The winners are those who take value (dollars) out of the markets through various investment strategies developed by Wharton School of Business and other economic think tanks educated in these types of schools including Columbia University by developing economic models on specific investment products or pools of stocks designed for one purpose, money extraction to be placed in the pockets of Trading Managers, CEO’s, CFO’s all of which who do not have the slightest care for the American Economic Systems. The tool for execution are derivatives. The initial intent of derivatives was to reduce rick on investments not withdraw asset value out of the market place.

A simple analogy for the layman is this; A well of water (dollars) provided financial institutions with water to cook, drink, and wash. This well water is replenished when it rains (savings) and the rain water seeps into the ground and refills the source for the well to continued to maintain its water level. During droughts the level declines but the well never dries up. What has happened in our financial institutions began using the water to wash cars, water their lawns, and they started bottling it and sold it to others in different packages, and consumed by drinking the water (compensation). The over use drained the well and perpetuated a self created drought.  To the rescue is our Government via the tax payer who will fill the well with future tax dollars for generations to come.

Serve the majority not the few

In the Sunday St. Petersburg Times two writings drew my attention. On the front page Double Dipping: Ire, but higher, by Times Senior Correspondent Lucy Morgan and in the Hernando Times section Guest column by C.D. Chamberlain, No Local preferences for contracts. Both deal with leadership decisions and their affects. Mr. Chamberlain addresses the issue from a psychological perspective, what is the intent of a policy, for whose benefit and at whose cost, where in economics we call it cost benefit analysis. The Double Dipping writing addresses the outcome of state policy making with a failed decision related to a cost benefit analysis.

Legislatures whether it is State or Local Governments continue to focus on the benefits for the few rather than the majority. We see this at the State Level when politicians, judges, administrators and anyone participating in the State Pension Fund are allowed to Double Dip because of a law written in 2001 by lawmakers, of which some are participating in this loophole. At the Local level in Hernando we see the same cronyism at its best in this new board of County Commissioners regarding Peck Sink. Favoritism for local firms would only be acceptable if that firm satisfied the three key factors in cost benefit analysis, or Social Return on Investment (SROI) something our local official should study when making future decisions. It is an approach to understanding and managing the impacts of a project, or a policy. It is based on stakeholders, the residents and all businesses not just real estate related, in Hernando County and puts financial values on the important impacts identified by stakeholders. The aim is to include the values of people that are often excluded from these decisions and not committees consisting of pre-selected campaign workers and political party supporters.

Israel After 60 years

Does anyone realize that after 60 years of conflict there should be an end to this. I gather we must fulfill prophecy because it seems that until the end days come it will continue for infinity. I was born in 1948 part of the generation who will witness the second coming, below is a link to the events of the creation of the State of Israel in that year. I once wrote a paper in a creative writing course in college 1974 which I received a A+, I wish I had saved it, it was entitled 26 Years in Labor Israels Birth.  I described the partitioning of the lands in question, and the plight of both sides in this mess. Innocent children being slaughtered because of an inability for grown people to come to an agreement or is it biblical with no solution.

Biblical background

Historical Background

http://www.zionism-israel.com/his/Israel_timeline_1948_1967.htm

Her are some answers to pertinent questions:

At its inception in 1948, how did Israel become a nation?

In 1947, the United Kingdom informed the UN of its desire to terminate its position as Mandatory Power and leave Palestine by August 1948. The UN passed a resolution to partition Palestine into a Jewish State and an Arab State. This non-binding resolution was accepted by the Jewish population and rejected by the Arab population. The UK abandoned the Mandate in May 1948, Israel became a state by declaring independence and war broke out immediately.

Was there injustice in this event?

The injustice is that the UN allowed the UK to abandon the Mandate without assigning another mandatory power. Resolution 181 was non-binding and required the acceptance of all parties to go forward. This clearly wasn’t the case. Another injustice occurred when the UN, once Israel declared statehood, did not establish the Arab areas as remaining under Mandatory control of the Trusteeship Council.

Who is responsible for the injustice?

The responsible party for the injustice is the United Nations.
The bottom line is that no matter what attempts are made to resolve this problem in the middle east, we will all be on the short end of the solution.

Democratic Platform 2008

July 13, 2008

Democratic Platform 2008

Domestic and Foreign Economics, Energy, Employment, Heath Care, and Foreign Policy

            Contributing Factors

1.      A realization that the United States can not compete with cheaper cost of labor  in emerging nations such as China, which makes it almost impossible to overcome without the lowering of compensation in U.S. labor markets to produce the same products and services.

2.      Foreign Trade Debt accumulation is one of the driving forces behind trade policies in the United States. Increasing Debt weakens our hand against other trading partners when going to the negotiation tables.

3.      National Debt contributes to our weaker bargaining position through the sale of Government Securities to foreign trading partners.

4.      Big Oil and Energy Producing Nations are in control of pricing and supply which adds to lobbyist policy making in Washington D.C.

Democratic Platform

1.      Economic Reforms- (A New Deal) Once again, take steps to establish financial separation of Banking from Investment Banking through an act similar to Glass-Steagall Act of 1933, to include energy. Enron was one example of the systems failure. The repeal of Glass-Steagall in 1999 by The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, also known as the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Financial Services Modernization Act, in my opinion was the most contributing factor to the current credit catastrophe, and speculators control of the markets. The greed mentality.

2.      Energy Independence- Short Term and Long Term initiatives to create alternative energy resources. Sun, Wind, Hydro-Electric and Nuclear. The supply side of these resources should be prorated notto create a majority dependency in one source. The percentage of each source should be determine by its natural supply, geographical location and estimated life cycle and waste by-products.

3.      Employment-Create jobs by investing in the United States, take the lead in establishing a new initiative by repairing our infrastructure in the United States. Education should be a top priority in preparing Americans to compete internationally. Provide educational opportunities to all Americans through incentives. Students can be educated but employment opportunities must be available to them.

4.      Health Care- The high cost of health Care contributes an average of 13% to a family’s budget if not insured by an employer. The cost to employers for its employees on average is 11 percent of their budget. Because we have 37 million uninsured a joint effort by the providers and maintenance organizations must be initiated to reduce heath care costs. Government initiatives and regulation initially, must be provided to guide and direct those involved to accomplish this objective. Technological advances in communication and storage capacities can be utilized to established regional databases serving localities to simplify the management of the insured, providers and health care payment processing.

5.      Foreign Policy- Negotiate from strength. But, never strong arm your adversaries when it comes to diplomacy. The policeman policy must be abandoned by the United States. Our strength internationally comes from our role in the international organizations which govern world issues. We have been a leader in world peace and humane initiatives. We must revert to peaceful negotiations rather than strong arm diplomacy. Abandon the bully perception the world has of us. Maintain a military unmatched by anyone, that alone is the deterrent necessary to convince our adversaries to peaceful compromise.

Human Nature

The best definition of Human Nature I’ve seen is from Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, “n the nature of man: as a: the complex of behavioral patterns, attitudes, and ideas which man acquires socially b: the complex of fundamental dispositions and traits of man.”

I personally have used the term all the time to describe a negative action or an expression by others which seemed unusual to me and those who had witnessed or those who had been on the receiving end of such an act or expression. The only time I have heard anyone else use the term was when describing a negative event perpetrated by an individual. This realization has brought me to this writing. I believe the definition needs to be rewritten to include acts of kindness or positive interaction. When describing negative acts or negative interaction the word inhuman must be used.

The events in today’s world are so complex that human nature has no positive definition. If we are to define it today based on the events now taking place locally and around the world we would certainly express the negative. Was it human nature that launched missiles’ from Gaza to Israel or Israel to Gaza? Was it human nature that embezzled 50 billion dollars from unsuspecting investors? Was it human nature that caused the collapse of the financial systems in the United States and the World? Was it human nature that approved mortgages to unqualified individuals? Group motives and objectives had everything to do with the above behaviors of the few and not the majority. No individual can cause the results we are experiencing today. No one person can be blamed but that persons can be singled out as a contributor to the group’s action.

If we as individuals allow ourselves to be part of a group who’s objectives and motives are less than admirable than we are guilty of violating the positive concepts of human nature separately and as a group. The term human nature used in the context of a description of negative acts or interactions tells the reader that the act is excusable or forgiven when it really isn’t. The term inhuman must be used to describe those acts and interactions which are less than admirable.

Wall Street-Where did the Money go?

Isn’t anyone questioning why these markets are trading the way they are? Wall Street always states that the public are the ones who make the markets move. They make you believe that normal every day people like “Joe the Plummer” trade their large stock portfolios or mutual fund positions on a daily basis. It reminds me of our elected representatives, they make you believe that because we elected them to office that you are in control when in fact they do whatever they want for whom they want regardless of what we desire.

On Thursday January 15, 2009 the Dow Jones was down as much as 200 points when the Senate and Congress were determining two important legislative decisions. One was to pass an 850 billion dollar stimulus package which they did which really was not the major factor in market activity. It was the Senates second hand out to Wall Street of 350 billion dollars which was the market mover. It is so obvious that so many people knew about the losses reported on the 16th of January 2009 by Citigroup (8.3 billion losses) and Bank of America/Merrill (118 billion losses) with a 20 billion dollar infusion as well. Supposedly this information was released on the 16th of January yet actions by our Senate were taken to calm the markets the day before and European markets traded higher prior to the information being released. Can some one tell me what’s wrong with this picture?

I seem to recall a SEC rule about insider trading. It is also called front running in trading.

The markets to day are being manipulated which got us in this mess in the first place. Markets are trading up not on good profit reports but on cash transfers to loosing corporations.  I have asked this question over and over. In every transaction there is a winner and a looser. Where is all this money going? We are supplying our Investment Banks, and our Banks and Insurance Companies with billions of dollars they supposedly lost. Where did the money go? I believe some one especially our Government should let us know since the taxpayers are paying the bills. I have my own conclusions to this question. But, I need a confirmation.

Exempt Children from Budget Cuts

The Republican controlled legislature once again prioritizes according to special interest influences instead of representing the people who voted for them.

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics the largest over-the-month decrease in the level of employment was recorded in Florida (-58,600) in the month of December, we currently have over 650,000 unemployed Floridians with a 7.3% unemployment rate. Hernando County alone has over 10% unemployed.

The State of Florida has begun to swing its axe by cutting $820 million from School Budgets. They have with one swing transferred the burden of budget cuts to local school boards. They don’t care how the job gets done its now out of their hands. This is Republican Florida State legislature at its worst. Why are the youth of this state and Hernando County bearing the burden?

Here is a no brainer; legislators can cut the state budget without affecting millions of school children. There are 8,175 Double Dippers in the state of Florida, retired state employees, legislators, judges, and municipal workers who are collecting a pension and are receiving their same salary plus their pension complements of a Republican legislature (1998 DROP program). If we assume that at the lowest end of the compensation scale there are double dippers receiving $40,000 a year the cost to the state is $327,000,000. This represents 14% of the state budget deficit and could reduce the School Budget cuts by 40%.

Gov. Charlie Crist pointed to the empty Capitol plaza and told supporters that Floridians ”know and understand” the difficult cuts lawmakers have to make. ”That’s why you don’t see protesters outside,” he said. Governor Crist people don’t understand the complexities of legislature if they did Tallahassee wouldn’t have enough space to accommodate the protest.

Bush’s Goodbye

I wanted to be critical of George W. Bush in this writing and say good ridden but my compassionate side dictated a different approach.  W has without malice transformed a once great and respected nation into a wounded and malformed extension of himself and the people he surrounded himself with. Without knowing he has exemplified what greatness isn’t. Through no fault of his own his party convinced him that he would be what this country needed knowing all along that he was unqualified to be a leader of the greatest country in the world. W knows that he failed us all through no fault of his own. Because of this rein of misguided ambitions the Republican Party and Democratic Party must be scrutinized and kept in check so that the future of this country will never be put in the hands of a system of self serving corrupt people again. Politics are the same at both the national level and the local level. Unless we change the way we elect leaders to public office we will never have a government for the people.

Obama-As the Stew Brews-Financial Potpourri

I have been silent lately for one specific reason. I needed to observe and listen to those making comments concerning our financial crisis at all levels of Government and in Corporate America. What I have observed are many of our elected officials and corporate officials displaying their inability to understand much less provide a logical or realistic plan necessary to solve the problems they themselves have created. They are confused as to which course will eventually help solve the plight of those who are in need of assistance and begin to correct the last eight years of mismanagement in Government and Corporate America.

Some of the examples of such confusion are as follows: The Hernando County School Board who previously approved raises across the board recently learned that many administrators would not accept a raise for the new budget year. They are now considering freezing all pay raises to save some teaching positions. Communication with administrators could have prevented this. The Congress passes a Stimulus package with pork built in. Millions of people have lost their jobs and business is as usual in the congress. Republicans are making a grandstand approach to the Stimulus yet not offering any real solutions themselves. It is apparent that to get a Republican to think outside the box after eight years of a semi-induced coma would be asking too much. Democrats are chomping at the bit because of their majority and continue to play politics with pork projects. Wall Street and Corporate American have been told that any firm receiving TARP funds in the future must limit executive Compensation to $500,000.00 a year. What an outrage. How could anyone live on $500,000.00 a year? One comment was if this policy does pass Wall Street and Corporate America will loose these top executives to someone else who will pay them the money. I don’t think so. First, who would want to hire these same people who created this financial catastrophe? Why reward them for creating a currently 7.6 % unemployment rate and possibly the collapse of the capitalistic system as we knew it. They probably feel they had nothing to do with the current collapse. I say let them go to the moon.

President Obama is attempting to impress the Congress of both Houses that inaction will continue to add to the deterioration of the basic foundations of our economy which are predominantly in the population’s ability to earn a living and spend, and secondly, in the banking systems which provides a means to transact this business.

Over the last 20 years we have built an economy on consumer credit, and the non regulation of Wall Streets creation of inflated corporate balance sheets. Through the use off balance sheet unregulated derivatives contracts and accounting methodologies, falsification of values on trading positions were used to provide big bonuses to most corporate executives. These creative products which have no real value except for the paper they are written on and the ability of both parties to meet their cash flow obligation were used to supposedly adjust the underlying balance sheet assets or liabilities cash flows.  The risk associated with these transactions were never really evaluated and considered as offsets to capital of those holding these positions. If they were analyzed and no one said anything about it, this would constitute a crime and those involved should be prosecuted.  The bottom line is that we finally have a leader who is trying to bring together both parties in congress, by attempting to put aside politics but there is one remaining factor that still eats away at progress, that is the special interest influence. Until those members of the congress shed themselves of these influences our progress to recovery will be at a snails pace.

Republicans should be angered by their lack of representation

Hernando County Republicans should begin to support their Democratic counterparts. It has become apparent that republican politicians don’t care about you. The Stimulus package was passed by 246 Democrats and ZERO out of 183 Republicans in the Congress, you must be proud of your Rep Ginny Brown Waite who voted against creating jobs locally for the construction industry, or educational support to keep teachers in their jobs, increased unemployment compensation, and a 65% subsidy for Cobra Health Insurance, and the beginning of the long awaited energy independence to support alternative energy sources which are part of this bill. Please don’t confuse Brown Waite’s political rhetoric utilizing the term pork, hopefully not referring to her Republican constituents who will be the recipients of this bills intent and who re- elected her, as pork. In the Senate 57 Democrat’s and 3 wise Republicans, 2 from Maine and one from Pennsylvania rose to this bi-partisan occasion without political agendas for the 2010 election year. There were 36 Senate Republicans who voted against this bill including John McCain. Here is a message to registered Republican’s who are currently receiving unemployment, you should not have a short memory in 2010, remember it was Democrats who were looking out for your interest in 2009.

County Commissioner Adkins

Mr. Adkins is very confused as to who is the blame for the economic downturn in Hernando County. He uses the word we when indicating who is the blame and I quote “We are all to blame. At the end of the day, we have to deal with the reality of the boom and the bust.” The last time I looked I did not sell any homes or financed them to unqualified borrowers. Why, are the people of Hernando County the blame for the actions of those realtors and mortgage brokers and mortgage companies who perpetrated this injustice and who profited from these transactions in spite of these peoples ability to buy and pay for these homes?

Mr. Adkins states that he has enlisted Mr. Ingoglia to assist in the development of this program because who else can help draft the program and help provide a solution to the problem. I quote Mr. Adkins “If we were having an economic crisis in manufacturing, wouldn’t it be wise to enlist a manufacturing expert?” The above analogy Mr. Adkins uses is incorrect for two reasons, first a manufacturing expert attempts to create efficiencies in manufacturing from an observers perspective not as a participant in the operation. Secondly, a manufacturing expert does not provide the resources necessary to create the product.  Mr. Ingoglia is a home builder with inventory and a Mortgage Banker who provides financing.  Mr. Ingoglia’s stated intentions may be admirable but, if that’s not a conflict of interests what is?

Finally, the program as outlined is a flipping scheme for investors to turn a profit after 2 years of ownership. The key word in the plan by Mr. Adkins and Mr. Ingoglia is “Second Home”. Our tax dollars can be put to a better use.

The New Civil War

No matter what side of the fence you stand on you must admit that over the last 48 years each presidential election has become a Civil War. A civil war is a war between organized groups to take control of a nation or region, or to change government policies as partially defined by Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_war#Further_definitions . I believe it should be expanded to include, change with or without military conflict.

Does the United Sates have a civil war every 4 to 8 years? Since 1960 I believe our country’s political census would suggest that we have been divided 50-50 in our political ideologies. Although the Republican party of Lincoln freed the slaves, the Republican party of today is attempting to once again to bring back slavery in their attempt to destroy unions and organization’s who support workers rights. Contrary to goals of the Republican Party, the Democratic Party is attempting to reestablish our constitutional rights as described in the Bill of Rights ensuring freedom of speech, and the pursuit of happiness which includes the access to an equal education, work opportunity, and affordable healthcare.

Our forefathers when writing the Constitution and Bill of Rights were inspired by the fact that their countries of origin did not provide those rights endeared to all people all of the time. The United States at times in it’s history has backslide making policies which resemble those injustices we originally tried to do away with and not have to experience ever again.

Some of the arguments you will hear from Republican supporters is that all people have the same opportunities, they want you to believe that there is no discrimination against those who they perceive to be different then they are. A pure example of this is the political rhetoric displayed during the 2008 election. Their actions put their political goals ahead of people, which still continue even after the election. Another example is the stimulus package developed by the Democratic Party and amended by Republicans. Although, the spending objectives were not met 100% they all voted against the stimulus except for three Republicans. The only reason they voted against the stimulus was for those constituent’s who are the extreme right base of the party. There are Republican’s who understand and know that the no vote was a political vote for 2010 elections and not substantiated by any real objection to the intent of the stimulus.  For those who say nay, and who believe they can dissect the stimulus bill and point out its failures is unrealistic and delusional. This bills objective will not be accomplished until all of its components are executed 100%.

The Republican Party continues to use fear tactics to keep hold of their followers. They try to portray Democrats as socialist’s even communist’s, they portray Democrats as big spenders, and baby killers. These stigma, are lies just to incite the Republican base and form a negative impression of good Americans who have just as much rights as they do. Their Biggest Mouth Rush Limbaugh is a reminder of the sensational overtones voiced during the mid thirties and early forties in Germany. If anyone believes that Limbaugh has any real unifying agenda they too are just as delusional as he. His chest pounding and un-American rhetoric continues to appeal to those who choose to be less tolerant of others differences and the use of charismatic oration, and propaganda border on totalitarian and dictatorial agendas. Republicans must be very wary of their association with Rush Limbaugh he may become the poster child for their downfall in a true Democracy.

The Republicans promise fiscal responsibility, although the facts don’t lie, from 1994 to 2000 the Republicans controlled the Senate & House under a Democratic President where the support of the Administration was a bi-partisan majority. They amassed a budget surplus under Bill Clinton a Democrat, only to be squandered in the next six years by a House and Senate controlled by the extremist right wing ideology of the Republican Party under the Presidency of George W. Bush. Republicans won the 2000 and 2004 elections by fear. America First, Family and Abortion were their platforms which elected them. In the mean time they were transferring wealth from the middle class to the rich, becoming opportunists over 9/11 by planning an invasion of the nation of Iraq to manipulate the price of oil and spend billions on a war in Iraq with no bid contracts to the special interests associated with Washington. Their campaign for right to life focused on the unborn but not the living who sacrificed their lives in Iraq.  There is plenty of blame to go around for this injustice on both sides, but the remaining fact is that the President and his congress lead our nation. George W. Bush and his congresses failed miserably in leadership and direction for our nation.

The new civil war is more than just differences of ideologies. It has become a separation of social stratus and the manipulation of individual emotional attitudes by a media controlled by competing forces in pursuit of the control of our political orientation’s, our nation, its wealth and remaining natural resources through the election process. Also, this control is influenced by external forces because of the mismanagement of our nation’s finances and international trading policies. The economics of the 80’s 90’s and the new millennium were based on leverage and credit. The house of cards have fallen, a renewed economic approach for a solid foundation in our economy is required if we are to survive this internal war. The great minds of this nation once provided the inspiration, and ideas based in humanitarian objectives not dollars and cents alone. The bottom line should be less important than the contribution to society any idea may bring. If Republicans and Democrats can truly promote unity in our nation and not separation we will succeed, if they don’t we are doomed to failure like all great nation in the past.

Privatizing Libraries

What an unpopular suggestion by Administrator Hamilton. This is the first time I’ve disagreed with him.

The State Aid to Libraries program was designed to be an incentive to local governments to provide efficient free public library services to its county residents. These incentives come in the form of monetary support from the state. It provides a 25% contribution to operating expenses, and other grants based upon requests from municipalities. Over the last 4 years Hernando County has received almost 5.6 million dollars in grants from the state for our library services. Hernando County was able to improve services and build a new Library in Spring Hill because of this.

Here are some of the negatives related to this suggestion. Forty one government employees could possibly loose their jobs or be asked to take pay cuts. If they are vested in the state pension plan they loose the opportunity for full benefits at retirement. We are supposed to be reducing unemployment not increasing it.

Grants are based on local municipal spending the lower the spending the lower the grant. Privatizing will reduce grants.

Profit motivated services provide less service and charge more for less service and it’s not free.

Mr. Hamilton should take a look at a temporary adjustment to the operating hours of the Library Services before privatizing. I also suggest that closer review of other operating areas be looked at for more cost cutting efficiencies. Possibly some of the stimulus money for education could be identified for the Public Library System.

Finally, the Public Library System is an extension of our educational system in Hernando County, and should not be put in the hands of profiteers, there is enough cutting by our state legislators going on in education without the county government adding more to it.

GOP Gone Wild

Wake up Hernando County. The Republican Party has made it perfectly clear what they want for this county, real estate development and more development. The election of Blaise Ingoglia to head the GOP in Hernando is proof to all citizens in this county that the focus for the future of Hernando will be on profits for real estate industries at the expense of everyone else including Republican voters not working in those industries. When Hernando County has been built out and all of its natural resources put at risk the Developers will move on to Citrus County. My friend Christopher L in Citrus has hopes that the Sun Coast Parkway never gets extended into Citrus County for fear of the same onslaught going on in Hernando.

You would think that the Republican Party would choose a person who would have a better grasp of issues which affect citizens of Hernando County and not special interests; Issues such as unemployment, environmental conservation, and influencing Corporations to relocate to Hernando. This week a Republican controlled Board of County Commissioners approved $500,000 for incentives to outside business to relocate here. Are they kidding?

Mr. Ingoglia’s concentration is on dollar issues, profits, selling homes and placing mortgages from which he makes his money. Mr. Ingoglia stated that a “vast majority of Americans agree with Republicans and conservative values”. First, Mr. Ingoglia proves how out of touch he is with that statement, just 5 months ago a Majority of Americans voted into office Democrats with very liberal ideals. Secondly, he has insulted every Democrat by saying that “when people vote Democrat they are voting against their family’s best interest”. Wrong again Mr. Ingoglia, they are voting for the betterment of their family rather than special interests. Finally, Mr. Ingoglia, states that “If disenfranchised Republicans choose not to accept, they cannot say we didn’t try”. I interpret this as him saying, if the Republican left and middle don’t agree with him too bad. This is an indication of the GOP attitude displayed during the Bush administration now controlling the local Republican Party and we certainly know what happened to them.

The Ingoglia Syndrome

Political sway is an art certainly mastered by Republicans in all forms of media, but truth will always prevail. Words can always be written to change the original meaning or objectives first composed. Ms. Castel has become a master at that by quoting out of context the original purpose of CPR.  Here is the purpose of CPR as written on page 163 of the Agenda Packet from the meeting held on Feb 11, 2009.

“The Hernando County “Comprehensive Plan for Recovery” (CPR) is designed to alleviate certain key factors in an effort to reduce the amount of time it takes for our community to stabilize our lagging local economy. CPR also works independently from any state or federal funding. In order for any economic stimulus to be effective it must be timely, temporary and targeted. The plan focuses on three general areas: reducing the amount of foreclosures on the market, assisting first time homebuyers and controlling capital improvement costs.

Ms. Castel has re-written the focus of CPR for the benefit of defending Mr. Ingoglia’s true intent. What she proposes as being the real intent reduced unemployment, is basically a side mention not even secondary to the plan just to bring buyers into the Hernando real estate market. The key error in the plan as stated is that CPR must be “timely, temporary, and targeted”. Real growth should be permanent not temporary.  The real plan authored by Mr. Ingoglia is written on pages 164 thru 167 purely dedicated to selling homes whether foreclosed or new to first time or second home buyers. There are no innovative ideas to create jobs. To those of us who aren’t ignorant that sounds like business as usual.

Mr. Ingoglia is a Capitalist and business man first all gifts whether personal or political are written off for tax purposes in his business. CPR would have used taxpayer dollars.  That sound like a Liberal to me.

April 28, 2009

Exposed

I will clearly state that I am a Democrat who believes in fiscal responsibility and a social justice for all citizens.  I believe that special interests have undermined our National and Local Governments ability to govern for the people as intended in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

My purpose concerning CPR was to inform the public as to its real purpose. Its purpose is to spend taxpayer dollars to reduce housing inventory subsequently stimulating the real estate and mortgage banking industry in Hernando County and related businesses. This although will help jobs in these industries does nothing for the overall economy of Hernando County. This approach to stimulus will do nothing for the unemployed over the long term. Short term solutions to long term problems never work.

Economic development in Hernando County requires serious and long term solutions. Over the next few decades Hernando County needs to address public transportation and job creation not only in real estate related industries which has been the focus since the 70’s. The Tampa Bay Transportation Authority has proposed express buses as part of their solution for Hernando County’s commute to business centers in Tampa. Hernando County needs to develop its own business centers. Bring in 1000’s of jobs not 10’s and 20’s. Major corporations need to be solicited with millions of dollars in incentives rather than $500,000.00. Investments through incentives will be returned to the local economy through spending, increased tax and fee revenues by citizens relocating here for better paying jobs.

Hernando County does not want to make the mistake of becoming the bedroom community of Tampa Bay. Ask anyone who comes from Long Island NY. Their real estate taxes are extreme.

History and Progress in Taxes

“Unquestionably, there is progress. The average American now pays twice as much in taxes as he formerly got in wages”.

Henry Louis Mencken (1880-1956) American journalist, satirist and social critic.

These words sum up the reality about taxes in the United States and generally around the world when referring to who bears the tax burden.

The history of taxation dates back to Egypt, Greece, and the Roman Empire. In Greece they taxed cooking oil, scribes (tax collectors) would audit households on the amount of cooking oil used. The Greeks taxed their population only during times of emergency like war. Once the conflict was over the tax was ended and if gains were made by the war refunds were made to the population. The Greeks also taxed those who did not have an Athenian mother or father 1 drachma for men and ½ a drachma for women. In Rome the earliest taxes were on commerce. Taxes were imposed on imports and exports called portoria. Caesar Augustus was considered the most brilliant tax strategist of the Roman Empire. During his reign the burden of tax collection was given to the cities instead of the central government. He taxed inheritances 5% except for gifts to children and spouses. The English and the Dutch used this model for their tax system. Julius Caesar had a 1% sales tax and Caesar Augustus had a 4% sales tax for slaves and 1% for everything else.

Great Britain- When Rome fell; Saxon Kings imposed taxes on land and property including substantial customs duties. During the 100 year (1337 to 1453) war between England and France there was a rebellion of the nobles of Aquitaine over the oppressive tax policies of Edward also know as the Black Prince. Taxes during the 14th century were progressive in 1377 the Poll tax imposed by the Duke of Lancaster was 520 times the tax on a peasant. The early tax structure was on the wealthy, office holders, and the clergy. The poor paid little or no taxes. It was Charles the First in his Kings Writ stated that taxes should be paid according to status and means, hence the progressive tax system. He was rewarded with this idea by being charged with treason and beheaded around 1629. In 1643 taxes were imposed on commodities to pay for Oliver Cromwell’s army. Parliament imposed taxes on meat and grains. Through an excise tax, taxes shifted the burden of taxes from the rich to the poor a very regressive tax. In 1647 there was the Smithfield riots, the riots were a result of the elimination of peasant hunting and the inability of peasants to feed their families because of the excise taxes on meat and grains.

Colonial Americans were paying taxes under many English Acts. Taxes were imposed on sugar, wine, and other commodities plus taxes on newspapers and commercial and legal documents.

Post Revolution America was noted for experimenting in taxation as well. In 1794 settlers west of the Alleghenies started the Whisky Rebellion against Alexander Hamilton’s excise tax. President Washington sent troops to quell the riots. In 1798 Congress enacted the Federal Property Tax to pay for the expansion of the Army and Navy. Does this sound familiar during Greece and Roman eras. In that same year John Fries started the Fries Rebellion in opposition to this tax who was also a militia organizer in the Whisky Rebellion. During both these rebellions individuals were charged with treason and than pardoned by our presidents at the time.

The first progressive income tax was suggested in the war of 1812 but never imposed because of the treaty of Ghent. The tax was fashioned after the British Tax Act of 1798. The tax act of 1861 proposed that “there shall be levied, collected and paid, upon annual income of every person residing in the U.S. whether derived from any kind of property or from any professional trade, employment, or vocation carried on in the United states or elsewhere, or from any source whatever. The 1861 Tax Act was passed but never put in force. Rates were 3% on income above $800.00 and 5% on income of individuals living outside the U.S. The Tax Act of 1862 was passed and signed by President Lincoln July 1, 1862. The rates were 3% on income above $600.00 and 5% on Income above $10,000.00. The rent or rental value of your home could be deducted from income in determining tax liability. The purpose was to finance the Civil War. Yet this was the beginning of the Tax Code now over 5000 pages.

Although the Tax Act was accepted only 276,661 people actually filed tax returns in a population of 38 million. After the Civil War taxpayer approval waned and the Tax Act of 1864 was modified to change to a flat 5% with the exemption of $1000.00. The tax was repealed in 1872 and Tariffs took its place to finance the U.S. government. Until 1913, when the 16th Amendment was passed which allowed the Congress to tax the citizens it was not allowed under the constitution.

In the 1930’s federal individual taxes were never more than 1.4% of GDP Corporate taxes were never more than 1.6% of GDP. In 1990 those same taxes were 8.77% and 1.99% respectively. What’s wrong with this picture? In 2006 individual taxes were 7.3% of GDP and Corporate taxes were 1.2% of GDP this was a 16.3 % decline and a 25% decline respectively from 1990.

Social Security myths:

”In other words, a democratic government is the only one in which those who vote for a tax can escape the obligation to pay it”.

Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1889) French social philosopher.

Participation would be voluntary.

Covered employment was mandatory. If you worked for local government you had the option.

Participants would only pay 1% of the 1st $1,400.00

In the1935 law the rate was 1% of the first $3,000 for the employer and the employee, and would increase by 1949 in steps to 3% on the first $3000.00.

Participants could deduct their contribution from income.

This is completely false. In fact the law forbids deductibility.

Participant contributions would be put in a Trust Fund and not used for General Operating purposes and only to fund Social Security Retirement Program.

This is basically correct. The question arises on the presentation in the overall budget. In the Johnson Administration the Trust Fund was part of a unified budget. That ended in 1990. They are shown as a separate line in the overall budget. The bottom line is that all monies collected are in the same pool of money used to finance the government operation of the United States.

The Annuity payments would never be taxed as income to retirees.

This was never a provision of the original law. In 1983 Congress changed that and authorized taxing of Social Security.

Ben Franklin’s said “but in the world nothing can be said to be certain except death and taxes.”

No one can argue with this. But, what we can do is argue about how they are spent and who should bear the burden. The original intent of taxation through out world history was to finance armies for war or military needs. As populations grew primarily in the 20th Century economic systems were unable to provide a means of income for all; Governments were forced to supplement not provide 100% of subsistence for those who were unable to sustain a modest lifestyle of necessities for themselves and their families. These ideals which are faith based dominate the Democratic Party ideals more so than our Republican opposition. A review of history in American Administrations will validate this statement. There is nothing wrong with a progressive tax system, providing a fair distribution of tax burden is applied. The current tax code has become regressive. The last two Republican administrations have manipulated the code to favor the wealthy and corporate interest. Statistics prove the shifting of the burden which has continued to move families from the middle class to poverty levels. Expendable income has declined because of declining incomes and increased costs for necessities such as education, healthcare insurance premiums, food, and housing insurance costs.

Hernando County Gas Taxes

Re: C.T. Bowens Article 5/29/2009 St Pete Times Editorial

Mr. Bowen writes very graciously of Commissioners Russell, Stabin’s and Atkin’s. The dismissal of any discussion on such an increase in a 3 Cent gas sales tax as describe by Mr Russell as if the burden of this tax will be so devastating to the public. As I watched the broadcast at the Hernando County Government site they spoke as if it’s ok for Exxon/Mobile, and OPEC to continually reap the rewards of price increases where none of those dollars come back to Hernando County. They spoke of the Federal Government taxes on gas as if they too are evil. It is precisely those taxes that provide efficient major road systems and maintenance which results in the public receiving a direct benefit from these taxes. We all know that their dismissal was political in all respects to protect Mr. Russell’s re-election in 2010. As Mr. Hamilton attempts to cut a now estimated 11 Million in expenses from the county budget the Board of County Commissioners do not have the political will to help him bridge these gaps. Their self serving interests confirmed by their approved discussions of reducing impacts fees not too long ago is an example of where their loyalties are instead of serving the public.

Let us put things in perspective.  A 3 Cent increase in gas tax per gallon will ad 4.5 cents per day to your expenses if you drive 30 miles a day and get 20 miles to the gallon in your Auto. This equates to $16.425 dollars a year to your gas bill based on 365 days. I can guarantee that these commissioners don’t really understand the impact or if they do are again just playing politics. Where are their backbones. To Mr. Russell, Mr. Stabin’s and Mr. Atkin’s Its just a another deception. We need leadership who will provide the public with the truth and present the data which will certainly result in a positive public opinion.

The Allusion of Logic

One definition of logic is “The formal systematic study of the principles of valid inference and correct reasoning” as defined by Wikipedia.

I can only conclude that logic is used in a presentation of factual information in an orderly sequence of subject matter to secure another’s concurrence of its conclusion. In layman terms, Information presented to convince the reader or listener and ultimately secure their agreement concerning the subject being discussed.

Recently, I have been having internet chat discussions with individuals concerning county government, its budget and tax alternatives. Most of these chat persons use alias’s and like to label people when their arguments do not contain any logic.  Labels such as, liberal, tax and spend democrat. These are national terms which we all have come to know.  Behind these terms are a representation of perceived ideals defined by no other than politicians for the political convenience of not having to explain logically ones views or objections to another’s views. These one, two or more word catch phrases become very convenient and present the allusion of logic to those who are unwilling to find the truth.

An example of logic is as follows: awhile back the county administration proposed a 1 to 3 cents gas tax increase. The increase was requested to reduce government expense in one area in an attempt to either reallocate funds to another budget area and possible reduce expenses in other areas. The increase if agreed to by the County Commissioner’s would have assisted the Administration in accomplishing this objective. The logic was to not affect a department or taxpayers materially. The tax if imposed would have cost a driver in Hernando approximately $16.00 a year almost 31 cents a week. What is illogical concerning the vote by the three of the commissioners is that they have no concern over the oil companies increasing gasoline prices 5 or 10 cents a gallon which leaves the county and does not benefit us whereas a 1 to 3 cents gas tax stays in the county and helps maintain our road systems. I agreed with the Administration and was labeled in my chats as a liberal democrat and of course a tax and spend democrat.

For those who feel this tax would be too expensive, just imagine when you hit that pot hole on Mariner, County Line, or Barclay and your wheel alignment goes out or you break an axle, what will that cost you, certainly not 16 dollars.

Healthcare and Capitalism

The debate over a Public Option for healthcare centers on the premise that Government’s entrance into the Capitalist System of providing healthcare insurance options will decrease the overall services they will be attempting enhance. The extreme rhetoric by the opposition centers on dollars and cents rather than providing services. An example of this is the rhetoric that anyone over 70 years of age needing a procedure will have to wait and possible die because of the wait, today procedures in most hospitals outside of emergencies take from diagnosis to procedure a minimum of two weeks and even more.

I remember after two unsuccessful operations in 2004 locally being told that I would have to wait three months to see a Specialist in Tampa for a relatively common problem. I chose not to wait and had the procedure performed by a good doctor in a neighboring county. Needless to say the procedure performed by this good doctor didn’t work. I finally waited for the specialist and the last two out of five operations were successful. The point being made by opposition to the public option is that waits will be longer. It took 5 operations and 3 years to correct my problem and this was under the current system. In my opinion there is only room for improvement.

The second argument currently being expressed through fear tactics is that employers will decide to drop their current plans so employees will be forced to take the public option. What hasn’t been discussed is that employers are currently being forced today to cut benefits and raise premiums paid by employees. Employers are also raising the number of hours needed to be worked to qualify for employer provided benefits. All of these cost saving methods continue to increase the number of uninsured in the United States. The reason for all of these actions taken by employers is a result of the cost of healthcare has doubled over the last 10 years. The question is why? Have healthcare employees salaries doubled, have provider fees doubled? The answer to both questions is no. But, Healthcare Insurance provider profits have.

The final argument being waged by the opposition is that Government intervention into a free capitalistic system only creates inefficiencies and waste. It was Government intervention that helped bring our country out of the depression of 1929. It was Government intervention in the 1940’s that provided Social Security to millions of Americans who would have starved to death. It was Government intervention in the 1960’s that provided Healthcare to millions of retirees who could not provide for themselves. . It was the lack of Government over site that almost brought the entire world into the greatest depression man kind has ever seen in 2008. The problem with Government is the Capitalist Intervention into Government through our elected Representatives.

Human services must be provided for those who are less fortunate. We Americans have always provided support to those who have been persecuted. We have provided support to those who have been starved. We are a nation of people who are Humanitarians. If we continue to ignore our own citizens who will come to help us?

Supreme Commissioners

Re: Stabins forges own budget, Barbara Behrendt, St. Petersburg Times

Mr. Stabins should have used the term governing body when referring to the county commissions implied lack of their role in making budget and policy decisions over the last 9 months instead of returning to their “supreme authority” role.

Although, jobs are a main concern in any cost reduction plan, the reality is that someone will suffer for decisions that must be made in an economic downturn. Those employees who have decided to take early retirement have displayed a compassion for their associates by helping those who still need to earn a living. Consolidation of positions indicates a move to efficiency. Long time employees who are departing in most cases have trained subordinates to conduct business in their absence. This is called a back up plan in most organizations.

The plan to dump the counties membership in the regional water supply authority is a political decision and not a budget decision. Mr. Russell and Mr. Stabins have never supported the Regional Water Authority made up of 3 counties Citrus, Hernando, and Sumter. Rose Rocco, Diane Rowden and Chris Kinngsley did (re: Regional Water Approach is best Hernando Officials say, Barbara Behrendt, March 15, 2008). The Regional Water Authority continues to protect our water supply from over development in conjunction with SWFTMUD regulation.

Mr. Stabins has now publicly attacked Mr. Hamilton by stating “David woks for us and I reject much of what he has proposed.” Mr. Stabins lacks the ability to make the hard decisions he faults Mr. Hamilton for making in behalf of our County Government and ultimately the tax payers of Hernando County. Mr. Hamilton should keep up the good work and Mr. Stabins should be held accountable for any budget shortfalls.

Washington D.C. The Bottom Line

After 233 years the people who govern our nation have become flim flam magicians. Not one of these elected officials has the desire or will to present a logical and just case for Health Care Reform much less a public option. They have taken a simple issue and have completely confused and misdirected the initial objectives for reform. I say a simple issue because we have a successful Health Care Plan that works, it’s called Medicare.

The Public Option is being portrayed to the public as a difficult goal when considering who gets affected by the change and how our national budget and costs to special interests will be burdensome. The American Public should be outraged by the complete disrespect for the majority’s wishes. Our Legislators have proven who their loyalties are to, certainly not the American people who put them in office. They have exemplified their desire to satisfy the industries and special interests who have supported their campaigns rather than their constituent’s who elected them to office, or did we?

They say that change is not easy. I have never believed this. Change is made difficult when the primary objective interferes with individual or group self interests. The controlling factor in this debate is monetary influence of our elected officials to satisfy the profit motives of those affected by change specifically those affected by a Public Option or Single Payer System.

The questions on my mind and should be on your mind is this, Why is it when our elected representatives have to vote on humanitarian issues such as Health Care reform they begin to dissect hundreds of pages of document’s. Yet, decide on giving trillions to banks and insurance companies based on a one or two page document. Why did we enter a war in Iraq with false information? Why are we spending trillions to create a democracy that will never be established in Iraq? Why do we imply that our goals are to lift up the Iraq people to a higher level of existence, when we are rejecting almost 47 million Americans without Health Care, and have over 3.5 million homeless in this country who don’t know where their next meal will come from?

The answer is the Bottom Line, “Corporate Profits”.

County Commission favor Builders over Taxpayers

Four months ago the Republican leadership on the County Commission proposed a 25% reduction of impact fees for 18 months recommended by their economic committee which was dropped because of budget considerations. Now we have a Commission proposing a 50% cut in impact fees back to 2001 levels for a 12 month period. Same package different wrapping.

Here is a little history. Impact fees are the same as they were in 2005. The difference is that prior to 2005 builders were allowed to prepay impact fees and possibly avoid increases. This was taken away with Ordinance 2005-16 signed by the County Commissioner’s at which time there was a Democratic Majority. It gave builders 3 years to apply for building permits or their money could be refunded, after June 2, 2008 no interest would be paid on deposits. These changes in 2005 were to assist the county administrator in balancing his budget.

The new County Commission with a Republican Majority are now trying to reverse these positive steps by allowing builders and developers to prepay their impact fees at half the price adding to budget deficits in both the Hernando County School Board and Hernando County Government and are transferring the cost onto the Taxpayers of Hernando County, the employees of Hernando County and School system through future layoffs and budget shortfalls.

Let us not forget why our local economy has the highest unemployment rate in the Tampa Bay area. Let us not forget the same people who accused the County Government of spending wildly are the same people who are looking for an impact fee cut. Let us not forget that it is the same people who want an impact fee cut who support the majority of the County Commissioners. Does this smell like special interest favoritism by our County Commissioners? Keep all of this in mind next year in November.

Some more facts about Impact Fees

This Sunday the Hernando Times publish two letters favoring an Impact Fee reduction.

We must compliment the Times Editor for his non bias presentation of the issue.

First let’s not confuse the readers this is a politically divided issue. So my associations are as obvious as the two letter writers associations to the other party. Putting political affiliations aside lets look at the facts concerning Impact Fees.

It is implied that costs for infrastructure have declined, this is not true. The cost to build a road, or install electrical and water service has not declined since 2001. The frequency has because of the downturn in the construction industry. The statement by the builders association that impact fees are charged to the buyer is true, but lowering them reduces the price of a home for the benefit of the builder (more sales and more profits) and the new homebuyer, but neglects to mention that the reduced tax revenue will not be enough to pay for the cost of infrastructure required for the new home therefore passing on the burden to the rest of the county taxpayers. Just as a reminder the builders and developers shared in the real estate bust don’t pass it on to banking alone.

My opposition to impact fee reduction goes way back to prior county commission boards.

In response to my other opposing letter writer concerning the $20 million down payment assistance for first time buyers is as follows.

The 20 Million was available to all 67 counties in Florida; if equally divided by 67 that would make available to Hernando $298,507.00 for First Time Buyers of Low income Housing. Most Fist Time Buyers are Lower to Lower Middle income household. Their credit ratings are sometimes lower than the average buyer rating of 700. In the 2008 credit crunch, lenders were looking towards higher end credit ratings over 700.  If we estimated the value of these lower priced homes at 100,000 and if lenders require a 10 to 15 percent down and closing costs of 2,500 on average, the average applicant will get 12,500 to 17,500 from this fund. This equates to 24 to 17 homes sold respectively. This is not what I would call a stimulus.

My political party affiliation has nothing to do with my opposition to lowering impact fees, just logic. The other party calls themselves capitalist when the profit margins are high and supply and demand work in their favor. When the times get tough they blame Government for high taxes and not stimulating the economy. You must share the burden like everyone else in this economic downturn and not pass the burden onto the Hernando County Taxpayers.

Commissioners Transfer Tax Burden (Wealth)

It is obvious that the leadership of Hernando County continue to prescribe to old solutions to long-term problems. Tuesdays vote to lower impact fees only proves that the real leadership does not sit on the County Commission but in Development, Builders, and Real Estate Offices. Our Commissioners have now provided their first promise to their financial supporters.

What is perplexing is that the Commissioners as a group can only focus on one idea to stimulate our real estate industry not the economy. Where are the jobs outside of real estate industry?

The voters of Hernando County must understand that until a tax base other than real estate taxes is developed all home owners in Hernando County will bear the full burden of financing County Government, the Sheriffs Department, County Schools and County Fires Services.

Don’t count on this Commission to keep taxes low, prepare for a tax increase with county deficits looming ahead. This vote by the County Commissioners on Tuesday not only placed the burden of taxation for infrastructure costs on the home owners but will continue to keep the value of your home low and will lower them for years to come. The reason is supply and demand. With builders adding new inventory on the market in addition to all the foreclosures and empty homes on the market values will continue to decline. This is a formula approved by your County Commissioners to increase county deficits and have home owners pay for them.

In October of next year when the Commissioners decide to raise the millage rate a half of a mil or exhaust the County Reserves and delay the tax increase for re-election reasons, and sell you a bill of goods that it is to protects the level of services to the County; remember the impact fee cut this past Tuesday given to their builders and developers their financial supporters. They were more important then the voters who put them in office.

Health Care A Simple Solution

Health Care can be reformed by offering not a public option, but a single payer option. To me its very simple, all those uninsured, or those who are tired of paying high premiums, or those small businesses who can’t afford premiums demanded by the Insurance Manopoly, should be afforded the option of purchasing a pre-medicare policy through Medicare for those between the ages of 21 and 64. Their premium will be much less than the current market and they will be exempt from medicare payroll deductions. This will help put medicare in the black. For those who choose to stay with their current insurance plans must continue to pay into the medicare trust through payroll reductions. I guarantee this will bring private insurance premiums down.

Those individuals and families who can’t afford full premiums will be accepted based upon income levels related to the poverty level. Most of the political oposition will of course call this socialism, I like to call it humanitarianism. Caring for those less fortunate is not socialism.

Special Interest Health Care Reform

The American public has just witnessed the power of special interests influence on a legislative process originally designed by our constitution to represent the people of the United States who now have very little representation if any. Although 60 votes were obtained 58 Democrats 2 Independents and surprise no Republicans, by Harry Reid he did not get them without compromise, or should I say without a payoff. It is plain and simple he had to buy votes in the name of compromise just to get a bill good or bad.

Health Care reform was initiated to reform the system for two reasons, first to provide health care for all Americans and second to provide that health care at a reasonable cost.

The senate bill does neither and has solidified the insurance industries strangle hold on the American consumer for years to come. The entire bill designed by the health care industry guarantees the industry 30 million more premium payers to fill their coffers and increase profits, those with pre existing conditions will be required to pay higher premiums and the elderly will also pay higher premiums. Even if a family of four fall under 400% of the poverty level ($88,000.00 per year) their $20,000 a year premium will be subsidized by our tax dollars.

The bottom line, our representatives have just given the insurance industry everything but the kitchen sink.  My recommendation is to buy Health Insurance Stocks who just hit a 50 year high and pray you don’t get sick.

Finally, as long as profit motives exsist in Health Care the cost of Health Care will never decline, and coverage for all will never be realized, therefore a SINGLE PAYER SYSTEM is required.

Supreme Court Decision on Corporate Political Ads

Today the Supreme Court has driven the final nail in the coffin of Democracy by allowing Corporations to pay for, out of their own treasuries, commercials and public ads promoting or supporting candidates whose policies and ideologies are that of theirs. The American public has once again been pushed aside and told that their votes will no longer determine who should represent them. The only defense against this is to boycott those Corporations. The 5 to 4 vote was based on party ideologies and not our democratic principals first determined in 1776. George Washington warned us of this and now with this confirmation as to who is in control of our legislative and judicial branches we are faced with the need for true change. If Americans continue to be complacent and not realize that our Democracy is in jeopardy by corporate control of our lives, think again. Wake up America, No honest Abe will ever be able to be elected to public office again with this ruling. Worthy candidates willing to serve the people whether it is local or national offices will be unable to compete because of the money being pump in by corporations. God help us all.

To the best of Geithner’s and Paulson’s recollection

Treasury Secretary Geithner and former Secretary Paulson’s testimony today at the AIG House oversight committee hearing has disclosed nothing new. Geithner continues to dodge questions related to his knowledge and his assistants’ knowledge related to AIG counterparty relationships and their associations with Government Officials such as Henry Paulson and his assistants who previously worked for Goldman Sachs. Specific questions related to counterparty settlements of 2.5 billion of U.S. Taxpayer Dollars to Goldman Sachs, and 16.5 Billion Taxpayer Dollars to a Foreign National Bank the top two recipients. The web of financial transaction connected many of the financial institution who received billion of T.A.R.P. tax dollars was the reason for rescuing AIG. Geithner’s rationale behind their decision was to prevent a financial catastrophe or meltdown of the US financial systems. Paulson’s rationale similar to Geithner’s was First AIG was too big to fail. That’s sounds familiar. Second, AIG was seriously unregulated. The wolves were guarding the Hen House. Third, AIG could not go into bankruptcy successfully. This was because its failure would affect other financial institutions. The bottom line was the U.S. Taxpayer had to make Goldman and other institutions both domestic and international whole by paying off AIG liabilities to those institutions that had political leverage through our government officials. Of course Paulson denies any role in the decisions being made to help make Goldman whole. The continued excuse is that the future of our economy was at risk. Not really knowing what the results would have been if AIG failed. The scare tactics used over and over again during the Bush/Chaney years to justify two wars carried over into this debacle used by Paulson, Geithner and Bernake. We wonder why the public doesn’t trust Government.

It must be an election year!

I think it’s time we shed some light on what really is going on in Hernando county politics.  We have a public servant by the name of Mr. Michael McHugh serving the Hernando county board of county commissioners.  His latest proposal which is probably eight years too late is an indication of how our local government really works.

It is no surprise to me that our republican controlled county commission, all of a sudden are concerned about the people of this county when their prior voting records indicate otherwise. For example the recent vote on the quarry development in northern Hernando and the reduction of impact fees are confirmations of the republican controlled commission’s loyalty to developers and real estate lobby’s. Mrs. Rocco’s no vote on the Quarry was a vote of conscience. Mr. Russell’s no vote on the Quarry was a vote of convenience and not of conviction.  Now that he is no longer the commission chairperson we will see exactly where he stands when the issues related to real estate development come up for a vote.

It is no mystery why Mrs. Rocco was passed over as chair person again this year, four republicans vs. one democrat, and if you think that special interests have control over our county commissioners now, after the supreme court decision allowing corporations to donate money from their treasuries which basically represent profits from doing business locally all you need to do is follow the money trail to the candidates.

If you believe that Mr. McHugh’s development plan was inspirational or unique think again. Thousands of counties throughout the United States have similar or more cost effective plans.  The uniqueness about this plan is only the timing of its presentation.  Exactly nine months before the election in November. This plan and its purpose will be the focus of political rhetoric for the next nine months, giving the voters of this county the impression that our commissioners really care about us.

Fortunately for republican politicians the jobs rhetoric has been taken from the democratic focus on issues and now is making it their own. Will the Grand Old Party, the Party of No for the people and the Party of Yes for Corporate American ever become independent and creative thinkers for the people again, I doubt it, special interests blind them.  Finally, if “sunburn” ever materializes I’d be surprised. Wake up Hernando County.

Political Performances Locally

Over 9,300 unemployed in Hernando County and Mr. McHugh has the audacity to brag about jobs created and retained 300. It’s a good thing he isn’t paid on job creation percentages. Although Mr. McHugh has made the papers quite a bit in the last year he has worked as the County Director of Business Development for over eight years. Who does his performance reviews?

Another public figure we haven’t heard from is Mr. Schenck our supposed State Representative for District 44, after two years since his reelection he now makes the papers with a nice photo. Mr. Robert Schenck recently proposed a bill to eliminate the eye in the ski red light cameras. His reason is that the red light cameras are a form of tax imposed to generate revenue for local governments, and he feels the public safety concerns for citizens is being used as a guise just to increase revenues. It is my opinion that those who violate the law should be penalized for their infraction. Technology is an aid to law enforcement and much less costly than hiring patrolmen to monitor traffic intersections. It also frees patrolmen up to respond to other calls assisting our public therefore increasing public safety. Mr. Schenck should learn about cost controls and efficiencies, but than again it is an election year.

Yet, this shouldn’t surprise us, Mr. Schenck’s priorities are misdirected, here are other bills he co sponsored or voted for; he sponsored HB 73 to expedite the Permitting Process for Economic Development Projects specifically Home Building Developments.

He voted No on Amendment 337171 to Extend Unemployment Benefits to Part Time workers who probably represent many unemployed persons in Hernando County.

He voted yes on Growth Management Deregulation SB 360.

He voted yes on HN1219 Permitting Offshore Drilling.

Mr. Schenck, who do you represent?

April 1, 2010

Voter rights jeopardized

In early April Commissioner Adkins will be proposing to the County Commissioners the creation of a Study Commission for a Charter Government.  Once he gets 2 more votes for the Study to be conducted by 2 other commissioners, Charter government will have to be considered on the ballot in an election for the public to decide at their expense if that is what they want and how they want the Charter to be written by a Study Commission.

It is obvious to me the origin of this thought process by Mr. Adkins is not from his creativity but possibly originates from the Hernando County Republican Party or a committee of the party. If you recall Mr. Adkins proposed an economic stimulus package in 2009 which he enlisted the help of local homebuilder Blaise Ingoglia to craft a three-pronged Comprehensive Plan for Recovery. This plan was defeated overwhelmingly by the county commission because of its ineffectiveness.

We now have Adkins et al proposing a takeover of our local government. Charter Governments strip away voter checks and balances against political manipulation of taxing and spending. It takes away Hernando County voter rights to decide who will be our Tax Collector, our Clerk of the Circuit Court our Property Appraiser, our Supervisor of Elections and finally our Sheriff.  All of these constitutional offices should be independent of a County Commission or Administrators Control.

Charter Governments are typically forms of government for City’s not Counties. When Charters are written many powers can be taken away from the voters and placed in the hands of the County Commissioners, Appointees or their Committees. One of these powers could include land development. Remember that Amendment 4 Hometown Democracy strips away control of land development from county commissioners and puts it in the hands of the voter, you the people. It seems that the current attempt to reduce voter powers is an attempt to destroy Hometown Democracy in Hernando County and many other voter rights.

Unemployment Extension approved

I’d truly like to address politics from a logical perspective but I find myself totally influenced by a theatrical perspective.  On Wednesday and Thursday July 21 and 22nd I glued myself to C span 1 and C span 2 the broadcasting network for the U.S. Congress and the broadcasting network for the U.S. senate respectively.  I watched the debate over whether to extend unemployment benefits to millions of Americans faced with the possibility of losing their homes, being unable to put food on their table, pay their rent, utility bills and other expenses which are part of the necessity to live if not approved. On one side the Democratic Party representatives voiced their concerns for the need to approve this extension immediately.  On the other side the Republican Party approach was to complain that the bill would not pay for itself.  They complained about the future generations their grandchildren and how they would have to pay for this bill.  The hypocrisy of their argument was so overwhelming I looked at these men and wondered if prior to entering these congressional chambers each of these republicans had taken drugs causing their irrational thinking.  If they were able to stick to the subject I would not be writing this but one by one Republican objections to the extension of unemployment were preceded by discussions of the need to do away with the inheritance tax for estates over seven million dollars, lifting the drilling ban in the Gulf of Mexico, extending the bush tax cuts for an additional decade all of which is not paid for.  They continually pointed out the fact that the current economic situation was a result of the Obama Administration policies. I began to visualize Monty Python’s Flying Circus.  If you had ever watched this program you would recognize some of these characters currently filling congressional and senatorial seats for the Republican Party.  Their complete disregard for facts and figures and out right lies is beyond comprehension to any intelligent human being.  Another movie comes to mind it is called the night of the living dead.  If you observe most Republican Party followers specifically the new tea party movement you will observe a similarity to the aforementioned movie. We are seeing the party of no, the party of obstruction, and the party of fabrication become more radical in their thinking. The leadership of this party does not exist. They are out of control and are becoming an additional burden if not a threat to our democracy.

Just some facts concerning some of their arguments, Tax increases do not loose jobs.

During the Clinton presidency he raised taxes and created over 10 million jobs. During Bush 2 presidency he lowered taxes to the wealthy and created 2 million jobs. At the end of the Clinton presidency we had a 236 billion budget surplus at the end of the Bush 2 presidency we had a 1.2 trillion deficit. Finally, during recessions and now the great recession the congresses both approved emergency unemployment extensions during the Reagan, Bush 1, and Bush 2 administrations without paying for it.

The United States and Rome

Many pieces have been written concerning the fall of the Roman Empire and the comparisons to the United States in recent years.

The reasons for the rise and fall of any great nation are many. There are connections to single factors, but more people think a combination of such factors as religion, decadence, superiority, monetary trouble, and military problems caused the fall of a once great society. Imperial incompetence and chance could be added to the list. Even the rise of Islam is proposed as the reason for the fall, does this sound familiar, these are some of the factors leading to the fall of the Roman Empire.

There are too many similarities to the United States of the last 10 years that worries me, lets look at the comparisons.

Religion then was rising with the Catholic Church exerting influence over Rome, in the United States for over 8 years we had the right wing evangelical influence over our Presidency and our Government Representatives which still exists for some representatives today.

Decadence, today the United States has continued its decline in manufacturing and trade superiority since the 1980’s. Our democratic processes normally entrusted to our elected legislators and our regulatory agencies by the people have been taken over by big business through campaign funding influences.

Our Superiority in Technology and Science has been systematically transferred to our International competitors through trade policies controlled by multinational Corporations influencing our government.

Monetary policy and basic economic systems which grew our nation have evolved into a casino like economics where values are place on how much money can be made at the expense of the uniformed players through the use of technology in short periods of investment rather than long term investments. These games of chance transfer wealth from 99% of Americans to the wealthiest 1% of Americans. This must end. Those controlling the wealth of our nation mainly Corporations and there top executives are taking control of our government at all levels, Federal, State and Local. There is no trickle down in America. Today they are flexing their muscles by hording trillions in cash on their balance sheets refusing to invest in capital and human resources necessary to get our economy moving again. This tactic to prevent growth will continue until the political environment is beneficial to them specifically the 2010 election.

Militarily we have been fighting two wars over the last 7 years spending billions if not trillions of dollars. This drain will be the major contributor to the continued decline of the American society unless stopped and a priority is focused on the welfare of the people of this Nation. Russia is a prime example of fighting a loosing war against a society based on tribal traditions, Afghanistan. This war bankrupted Russia and the people of that nation lost.

Rome was divided into two controlling empires the east and the west. The similarities are stunning as to what is happening in the United States. The divisions of the Republican and the Democratic Parties has widened so dramatically over the last 3 years with no signs of ever having again a bipartisan government. This extreme division has contributed to an ineffective legislature and less productive legislation for the people. If the houses of congress have split majorities as a result of the 2010 elections you can depend on a stagnant government until the 2012 elections and possibly into the future.

Complacency and lack of understanding on the part of every American must be added as a contributing factor to the fall of our nation. If we the people do nothing to stop this spiral down the future of our children and grandchildren is grim. Let us clear our minds of all the campaign rhetoric, read about and understand the candidates and what they really stand for. It’s hard work, but necessary work. Do not make the excuse that you are tired when you come home from work, if you have a job. Today’s network media is easily accessible yet not the place to get your information, you must read independent sources of information on the same subject. Then form your opinion and vote in every election it is a right you must exercise.

Voting an Act of Democracy

Many citizens do not exercise their right to vote. They give up their right to express themselves on the issues by not voting because taking the time in our very busy lives to vote and investigate the issues is cumbersome to them. Some think that their one vote does not make a difference so why vote.

Often elections are decided by a very small majority of those eligible and registered to vote. The success of our democratic system depends on the willingness of all the people to be self-governing. In America, to say that we have a government that is for, by, and of the people does not mean that each citizen has the power and simply exercises that power   but rather that each citizen has the responsibility to actively participate in the voting process. Therefore, the problem of decreased voter participation is a serious one.

Several reasons for this problem of voter apathy have become apparent. In many elections, a majority of Americans find themselves compromising their views and voting not for a candidate with whom they agree with, but rather for the candidate who they dislike the least. This compromise that is forced upon the people is a result of the two-party system on which we rely for voting simplicity. Also, many voters are saddened by the fact that their views are not represented by their elected officials, and that they have no real power in their government. Voters have expressed their apathy by stating that it doesn’t matter who they vote for, because they were essentially all the same, and none of them would represent them effectively.

Your vote does make the difference. Not everyone will agree with your vote but voting may elect the right candidate or prevent the wrong candidate from being elected or reelected.  The future of our County, State, and Country should be in your hands, not in the hands of the power brokers who constantly decide elections because of the amount of money they have. Money is powerful but your vote has a greater power.

Our current system of voter registration in Hernando County has changed so that registration is a simpler, faster process in order to increase the level of voter participation. Use of absentee/mail ballots has been encouraged and early voting polling locations are published at the Supervisor of Elections Web Site so that all voters are aware of these locations. The above steps are taken in order to simplify the voting process, and encourage more people to vote because less effort will be required of them. The absentee/mail ballots request form can be obtained on-line at www.hernandovotes.com/absentee.htm or call their office 754-4125 and request an absentee ballot/mail form.

Democracy can only exist when the voters are willing and able to take an active role in their government by casting their vote. If we can increase voter participation in all elections by simplifying the voting process, and allowing for voter representation of all views in our government, then the means to a necessary end will be accomplished and a true Democracy will prevail.

Priorities are influenced

Re: Brooksville residents hear rationale for decision to raze of two apartment complexes

Tony Marrero, 9/23/2010

I realize that decision making priorities facing the Brookville City Council can be difficult but the choice between putting people out on the street, an inhuman gesture, and the saving of a Golf Course just bewilders me. (Quarry Golf Course is worth saving

By Dan Dewitt, 9/24/2010)

After years of corruption by officials of the Brooksville Housing Authority the residents of Hillside Estates and Summit Villas are being evicted not because they created a problem but because their Government mismanaged the properties to an extent that they are in a condition of ill repair. So they say?

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) owns both properties in question. Yet the Brookville City Government has first right of sale for both properties. This means that after demolition of these homes they can sell these properties to any developer they please to.

The Brooksville Housing Authority members consist of individuals with associations to real estate property sales and developers. This seems to be a conflict of interests in my opinion which is driving the decision making to displace innocent residents of Hillside Estates and Summit Villas. The case against renovation seems overstated. It was stated by Tommy L. Brooks Sr. that Exec. Dir. Of the Housing Authority that renovations would run $17,000,000 as estimated. This equates to almost $130,000 per unit. Something is wrong with the estimates. A brand new three bedroom home can be built for that amount. I believe an investigation by HUD should be made into the reasons behind the decision being made by the Brooksville Housing Authority and their relationships with local land developers and builders.

Truth in Talk Radio

On Monday 10/18 I listened to Bob Haa’s local radio broadcast, whose guest speaker was Mr. Robert Schenck (R) State Representative for District 44. Mr. Schenck’s opening statement was about how he reduced the state budget. I wonder if Florida’s balanced budget amendment had anything to do with it.

Based on the content of the questions of the 6 callers five were Republican callers with questions relating to new legislature on mandatory septic tank inspections, installation of water meters on private ground wells and red light cameras laws. Mr. Schenck calls all of these proposed laws socialism. When asked why he voted to increase License and Car Registration Fees, he admitted he made a mistake. When asked about originally voting for the now named Taj Mahal Courthouse and an additional $7.7 million dollars increase to the project costs which was attached to a bill which came out of the Transportation Committee which he sat on, he said it wasn’t his fault but a procedural problem at the state level. Then he said he tried to repeal the Car and License fee increases this year and voted against the bond funding for the Taj Mahal.

If this sounds familiar it’s because some politicians are for some things and then against them in an election year. If Mr. Schenck was against them he should have voted no originally. That’s called doing your homework. Some of the issues he had no response and said he would have to look up when he got back to the office to refresh his memory.

Knowing the political bias of Mr. Haa’s broadcasts I was surprised when he let one get by him, he some how allowed one caller of the opposite political party through to ask questions of Mr. Schenck.

The caller asked Mr. Schenck a question concerning his campaign rhetoric calling his opponent a tax and spend Democrat. Mr. Schenck cites that Diane Rowden voted no on a .5 mil rate reduction for the general fund in the 2008 budget year when he was no longer on the County Commission. The caller than indicated that over the eight years Diane Rowden served on the County Commission she voted yes to lower property millage rates resulting in lower property taxes of over $35 Million while Robert Schenck in his less than four years served lowered property taxes only $2 Million. His response indicated that he was not aware of the numbers.

Some times its good to listen to talk radio and sometimes it isn’t. I prescribe to reading about the issues in the St. Petersburg Times where the facts are printed.

The Lame Duck Is Miserable

The dust has settled on a devastating defeat on November 2, 2010. The anti acids are soothing but the reality still plagues us mentally. Billions were spent on campaigns for change from either party yet the rhetoric remains the same. In January Republicans will take control of the House of Representatives and have a good size minority in the Senate with two Independents. Over the last two years the Democratic control of both houses looked for compromise and bipartisan participation to accomplish a sustained growth in the economy, the beginnings of a health care reformation, and a constitutional idea to protect the common good of the nation by once again including the middle class. On all fronts current statistics are indicating progress in all of these areas. The economy is growing, initial unemployment claims are down, and more people are getting health care.

Now the winning party has begun to once again attack the accomplishments of the past two years with the same rhetoric and demand bi partisanship one day and look to repeal everything that has provided a path to success the next. They believe that they have a mandate from the people because of the election results. NOT, they are being challenged to continue what needs
to be fixed. Fiscal responsibility has been their campaign by those who put us in this mess in the first place from 2001 to 2008. The deficits need to be attacked. Not by going back to the Bush tax cuts for the rich and add an additional 700 billion to the deficit. The so called bipartisan committee formed by president Obama is attacking Pentagon spending, proposed? 100 billion cut, Social Security, Medicare, entitlements and tax cuts to the middle class, does this sound familiar? The people who bear the burden currently the middle class and who have suffered the most by the Bush induced misery are being asked
to sacrifice again for the sake of the country and of course to fill the coffers of the top 2%. Here’s the new misery index the percent of Republicans in the House of Representatives (55.6%) and Senate (47%) added to the percent unemployed (9.6%) equals 112.2%  now that’s a fever that needs medication.

If anything gets done over the next two years it will certainly be a miracle. I hope President Obama has his VETO pen ready.

Pay back and Tax cuts for the top 2%

What we are experiencing now in Washington is a real example of pay back. The 2010 midterms racked up total campaign spending of 4 billion dollars exceeding the 2006 midterms which raised 2.85 billion dollars. These contributions
represent money given by individuals, small businesses and corporations, to candidates directly or through the DNC, RNC and PAC.

How does payback work you may ask? A prime example is what Republicans are fighting for today in Washington.
Whether it be the Senate or House they are fighting to give the top 2% of our economy seven hundred billion dollars ($700,000,000,000.00) in tax cuts for their investment in their campaigns totaling two billion dollars (2,000,000,000) . If you calculate the return it is obscene at a whopping 35,000% return. To put this in perspective if you invest 10,000 on January 1, 2010 at 35,000% you would get back 3,500,000.00 dollars on December 31st. How many Americans are getting that return on their CD?

All Americans must start to realize that the middle class whether you are Lower, Middle or Upper regardless of party affiliation have been prayed upon by the wealthy and influential. Through Wall Street, Investment Banking, and Insurance Companies and politically controlled Republican representatives’ the wealth of middle class has been stolen by the top 2%. How have they accomplished this? Deregulation of the Financial Services Industry in 1999 was the start. It began in 2000 with the Supreme Court election of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. The Tax cuts in 2001 and 2003, two wars in 2001 and
2003, all of which were not paid for. The subsequent great depression caused by these irresponsible republican policies and the bail out by the United Sates Government protecting the wealth of our nation of which the cost still undetermined will be added to the debt. The massive debt built because of these irresponsible policies 1 Trillion dollars and growing and the transferring of the wealth to the top 2% is now being asked to be paid for by the middle class through reducing entitlement programs such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans Benefits freezing pay for  Government Workers and the denying the Unemployed. Basically not only have they ripped us off but now they want us to pay again for that which they stole from us.

The argument for tax cuts being presented by the Republicans is that the top 2% represent small businesses and job creators. Here are some facts 98% of small businesses earns less than $250,000 of taxable income. Most small businesses average return on gross revenues after expenses is 10%  a year. A small business would have to gross 2.5 million dollars to be taxed at an adjusted taxable income over $250,000.00. How many of the mom and pop shops gross 2.5 million dollars? Please read the 2009 SBA report. Effective Federal Income Tax Rates Faced By Small - US Small

File Format: PDF/Adobe Acrobat – Quick View

Bottom line Joe the Plummer is not the Small business the Republicans are representing. The top 2% do not represent small businesses or job creators. It’s pay back time by Republican and their integrity is questioned and rightfully so.

The Great Con Job

If you’re wondering why there is pessimism and suffering in America you only need to look at what the Republican Administrations had perpetrated from 2000 to 2008. Most citizens have lost their faith in the systems provided to us
by our forefathers which guaranteed every American an opportunity to succeed.

Our Electoral Process was manipulated in the 2000 elections. Our presidency was decided by the Supreme Court. This was preceded by a purposeful deregulation of the financial services industry in 1999 with the Gramm, Leach, Bliley Act all of these sponsors were Republican and President Clinton could not veto the bill because the Republicans had a two thirds margin to override his veto.  In 2001 the World Trade Center attack shook America at its foundation which went unrecognized by the Republican Administration at the time to change our priorities as a nation. The propaganda machine of government utilizing our legislators who were controlled by corporate influence provided the media with constant erroneous information to accomplish one objective. Create a diversion in the day to day lives of all Americans in order to transfer the wealth of a nation to the top two percent wealth holders in the United States. While all Americans specifically Joe Middle Class were focused on the nine eleven tragedy and two wars fabricated by the Bush Administration Wall Street and Corporate America were reaping the rewards of the great con.

A picture is worth a thousand words:

Beginning in 1995 until 2007 republicans held a majority in both houses of congress except for the Senate in 107th congress
2001-2003 when it was split 50/50.  Reference:   http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0774721.html

Make no mistake when history is written the George W. Bush Dick Cheney Presidency will go down in history as the worst or at least one of the worst presidencies in the history of the United States.

It is now two years later into the Obama Administration with Republicans attributing our economic disaster to President Obama and the democratic controlled congress. If you listen intelligently to Mitch McConnell and John Boehner you wonder how they were elected and whom do they represent. All of their rhetoric borders on lies and nonsense. Their logic defies
rationality.  An example of this creative logic is the tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of Americans in the United States.
Their argument is that a continued deficit creating tax cuts to the top 2% will create jobs in a recessionary economy. These tax cuts which originally contributed to the deficits and the recession will stimulate jobs growth. The Bush era tax
cuts created 1 million jobs until the election of Obama six months into Obama’s term June 2009 all of those jobs were lost. In affect the Bush era tax cuts lost jobs.

Reprint-Day in the Life of Joe Middle-Class Republican

By John Gray Cincinnati, Ohio 2004

Joe gets up at 6:00am to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot full
of good clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water
quality standards. He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of
coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to
insure their safety and work as advertised.

All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan
because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical
insurance, now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and
eggs this day. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for
laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; His bottle is
properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount of its contents
because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his
body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep
breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree hugging liberal
fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the
subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him
considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal
fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the
opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medicals
benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union
members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays
these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call
the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he’ll get a
worker compensation or unemployment check because some liberal didn’t think
he should loose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

Its noon time, Joe needs to make a Bank Deposit so he can pay some bills.
Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted
to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking
system before the depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten Mortgage and his below market
federal student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Joe and the
government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over
his life-time.

Joe is home from work, he plans to visit his father this evening at his farm
home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dads; his car is
among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety
standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to
live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers
didn’t want to make rural loans. The house didn’t have electric until some
big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded
rural electrification. (Those rural Republican’s would still be sitting in
the dark)

He is happy to see his dad who is now retired. His dad lives on Social
Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take
care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to. After his visit with dad he gets
back in his car for the ride home.

He turns on a radio talk show, the host’s keeps saying that liberals are bad
and conservatives are good. (He doesn’t tell Joe that his beloved
Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys
throughout his day)  Joe agrees, “We don’t need those big government
liberals ruining our lives; after all, I’m a self made man who believes
everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have”.

Crocodile Tears

OK I’ll be the first insensitive to call these teary eyed Republicans out. John Boehner during an interview became overwhelmed with the fact that his grandchildren would have to pay the debts our government is creating with our current spending policies. Here’s a Republican who has been in office for over 16 years who participated in the deregulation of Wall Street, who voted in all the tax cuts for the rich, who voted for two wars costing 1.2 trillion dollars, and who has no compassion for the lower and middle classes. Suddenly gets a jolt of consciousness and is worried about his grandchildren. Not our grandchildren. Let me just ease your pain ladies and gentleman, Congressman Boehner’s grandchildren are set for life, they probably have all their education paid for and very big trusts waiting them.

Mitch McConnell in the senate yesterday got choked up when saying goodbye to Senator Judd Gregg of Republican NH. He too has been in the congress for over 16 years who also participated in the deregulation of Wall Street, who voted in all the tax cuts for the rich, who voted for two wars costing 1.2 trillion dollars, and who has no compassion for the lower and middle classes.

Have these two ever seen a homeless family of four living in the woods eating one meal a day provided by charitable middle class Americans. Where is their compassion for the unemployed who have worked years to achieve success only to find them selves out of work because their legislators decided that war, oil and tax cuts to the rich are more important than the lives of the people they supposedly represent?

One commentator said it right last night. Listen to what they say rather than the image they want to project. Our society depends too much on images rather than, to use the words of Martin Luther King Jr., “the content of their character”.

No Tax Cuts without Representation

Who will pay? The poor and the middle class will pay. How you ask? Money given to the poor and middle class get spent in the economy creating demand for products and services. They buy food clothing and needed services the necessities to provide for a family not a dime will go into savings. Money given to the wealthy if not spent on luxuries goes directly into their trusts, savings, and ultimately their investments creating no demand for products and services, but does generate fees and commissions for Wall Street. The billions of dollars going to the poor and middle class stimulate economic activity that eventually go to the rich and wealthy in the form of dividends and capital gains, while the billions going to the rich and wealthy increase their wealth even more. It’s a loose loose situation for the poor and middle class. Why? Since our representatives in Washington refuse to have the rich and wealthy pay for their fare share the poor and middle class will pay eventually through increased taxes and cuts in entitlement programs targeted by bi-partisan Democrats and a majority of Republicans. This bill has set the precedent connecting Social Security to the national debt for the first time in our history even though Social Security is the only solvent entitlement program in the Government Budget a 2.6 Trillion Dollar Surplus which pays for itself and those bi-partisan Democrats and Republicans want to raid this trust to again transfer more money to the rich and wealthy. They couldn’t do it by privatizing so they will raid it by connecting it to our deficit budget.

It has been reported that the 2010 midterms raised 4 billion dollars from donors. Senators and Congressman received 4 billion dollars to get elected. A majority came from the Wealthy and Corporations run by the Wealthy. These donors consider their contributions as an investment because they can’t take a tax deduction. How do you get a return on your investment of a campaign donation? You get an extension of the Bush tax cuts Plus. What is the return? If you just include the Estate Tax and Capital Gains and Dividend savings of 121 billion dollars that’s a return of 3025% over two years to simplify the numbers if you invest 1 thousand dollars for two years your return would be $30,250 dollars after two years. In Washington money talks louder than votes.

The odds are stacked against the poor and middle class Americans. The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that Corporations are People under our constitution giving them same rights as you and I. Washington has been taken over by Corporate American, Foreign Influence and Special Interests through our Elected Representatives. We no longer have a representative government. We have a ruling class. This Bill proves that.

Yes We Are, Democrats

Webster defines a Democrat as an adherent to Democracy or one who practices social equality, Democracy meaning Government by the people or rule of the majority government in which the supreme power is vested in and exercised through a system of representation involving periodical held free elections. We participate in a Republic form of government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in modern times is a president, a government in which a supreme power resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected officers and representatives responsible to them and governing according to law.

The oldest party in the united states is the Democratic party originally known as the Democratic-Republican Party until the 1830’s when Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren formed today’s Democratic Party.  During the same period a faction representing the new Wig Party was formed today it is known as the Republican Party. The new Democratic Party became a coalition of farmers, city-dwelling laborers, and Irish Catholics. Democrats opposed elites and aristocrats, the Bank of the United States, and the whiggish modernizing programs that would build up industry at the expense of the laborer or independent small farmer. Today our modern parties have evolved yet have not changed their basic principles.

We have failed ourselves

The events in Tucson on January 8, 2011 the assassination attempt of Congresswomen Gabrielle Giffords, the murder of 6 individuals and wounding of 13 innocent bystanders  is the direct result of the lack of sensitivity and respect for one another practiced and sometimes promoted by those institutions and individuals who have an  influence over our country’s morality.  read more »

Commissioners pick and choose who to tax

Re: Hernando commissioners will enforce, park, boat and ramp fees after all

I have a question for the County Commissioner. Why are you willing to enforce user fees on your constituents put in place last year which is a form of taxation, a consumption tax on community activities which fall under the heading of infrastructure amenities and are willing to give fee breaks to the building industry? In November of 2009 the county commissioners lowered impact fees to 2001 rates of $4,800 from 2009 rates of $9,200 and extended those lower fees to November 2011 in November 2010. Theses reductions were made to stimulate employment growth in the building industry when Hernando unemployment was 14.6%. Today as of the latest Bureau of Labor and Statistics report that rate is 15.2%, so much for stimulating job growth. There were 199 permits issued in 2010 because of the reduced impact fees Hernando County revenues were reduced by $875,600 (199 times $4,400 ) adding to the current budget deficits.  read more »

Ronald Reagan for President in 2012?

I am always interested in what the other side is doing; recently the rhetoric includes quotes, references and commentary on Ronald Reagan. So I wanted to see locally what the Republican Party was up to, I visited the Hernando County Republican Executive Committee website and viewed a YouTube video celebrating Ronald Reagan’s 100 birthday by presenting Ronald Reagan’s state of the union message in the 1980’s. read more »

Dredge Project with overdraft protection

Over two years our county administrator and county commissioners have utilized reserve funds to balance our budget by cutting operating costs and transferring money from reserve accounts to pay bills. Transferring reserves are simply accounting transactions to cover expenses in excess of revenues for example anyone who has overdraft checking linked to their savings account can understand this. When you write a check in excess of your checking balance an automatic transfer from your savings covers the overdraft. This kind of financial management is a temporary fix when revenues are declining and an assumption that revenues will increase in the future to satisfy the imbalances being satisfied by reserve (savings) transfers.  read more »
